13-TH 5 CAROUN A TIMES SATIllAY 12r1979 4) jCBPP 1 The National Consor tium for. Black Profes- ! stand Development, a non-profit educational ; services organization V- Ated in Louisville, Ken tucky, is convening its fifth annual conference in Norfolk, Virginia, May 14-17. Focusing on the theme: "Emphasis on Youth," this year's event has two major com ponents: (1) the organiza tion's fourth Annual Na tional Student Science and Engineering Competition and (2) a Science Sym posium. The Competition was first organized as an on going project when NCBPD officials, came to the realization that science-oriented Black youth - were not par ticipating in existing science fairs and competi tions at the local, state andor regional and na tional levels. This lack of participation was due to a variety of factors, but there is no doubt that the serious dearth of Black scientists and engineers who could serve as suc cessful role models for 'science-gifted Black youngsters was crucial. .Another factor, many LiGGflflrag observers felt, was the small number of Black owned manufacturing and engineering firms nation wide which could spearhead an increase in the pool of Black scientists and engineers by offering employment in these fields. The NCBPD's Competition, therefore, was organized to dramatize involvement with science and engineer ing among Black youngsters and, thus hopefully to cause a significant increase in the overall pool of Black scientists and engineers by the year 2000. In this year's Competi tion, science projects will be judged in seven (7) categories, including: Agricultural, Animal and Nutrition Sciences Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Behavioral Science Biological, Life and Marine Sciences Engineering Health Sciences Physical, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences In addition to cer tificates, field trips, various plaques and trophies, and other prizes of value, cash awards will Quick-Mix Pie Sets Trend uiiii' i i -nri i a i. fifroamlinn nip mnkinir with a Frozen Banana Pie made the quick-mix way.
