Film Clips V L uuuuuuuuuuuuuuc 1 mnnnnnnirTrinhnn Way 'Beyond (The V; Poseidon Adventure' by Chuck Bins Remember when Maur een McGovern sang 'There '-s Got to Be a Morning After' that fateful New Year's Eve aboard the S.S. Poseidon? Well, it's hard to believe, but Irwin 'Towering Inferno' Allen, has done it he created 'a morning after for the luxury ocean liner. Oh, you thought it sank. No, but almost. Irt this disaster sequel, the ailing ship remains belly-up in the Mediterranean long enough for two groups of people to board. Following the big storm, Michael Caine, Karl Maiden and Sally Field arrive by tugboat with visions of salvaging the ship's money and jewelry. Minutes later, Telly Savalas and his white outfitted thugs, posing as a medical team, arrive by yacht with a more clandes tine operation in mind. Once aboard the topsy turvy craft, they are con fronted by oh no blasts of steam, internal explo sions, falling objects, flood ed passageways, hot, licks of fire and (gasp) more survivors (Angela Cartw right, Veronica Hamel. Mark Harmon, Peter Boyle, Shirley Jones; Slim Pick ens, Shirley Knight and Jack Warden). . - To complicate things for Michael Caine, the heart felt leader of this Raggedy Ann crew, Slim Pickens is drunk, Jack Warden is blind, Shirley Knight suffers a dislocated shoulder and Karl Maiden left home What Are The Odds? The odds are that 3 out of every 4 people, over 65 will develop cataract, but of those .who undergo surgery to cor rect ' this leading cause of blindness, 95 percent will re cover their sight. -- Children don't usually com plain about a vision problem because they don't JcnoW how well they should ee. But the odds are one in 20 that a preschool child has some kind of eye disorder. " V.' without his American Express card to pay for a badly needed operation. ; Sally Fields helps inject some humanness into the film, 'but even she, at times, looks like she'd rather be back on the set of 'Norma Rae.' . The upside-down sets are impeccably . accurate (Allen spent more than a year constructing v them), however there is less than " a minute of real all-out disaster in this film, and the script reads like a Mad magazine lampoon. When the crew, faces a six-foot hole Jaced with live wires, .; their,, conversation degenerates into a. who's ? who in the broad jump. It's apparently too' much for Savalas and his men. who split off with the only copy . of the ship's map to search for a tnore lucrative cargo. ., As the plot thickens, Veronica Hamel apparently knows .Savalas from a previous encounter and,' after rummaging through the ships files, has an idea - of what he is up to. Yet the -audience never finds out the whole story only that Savalas' underworld con . nections are 'more power ful than any general at the Pentagon. And before the audience learns anything more, Savalas has her shot because "she -knows too much," (She stays alive probably longer - than anyone ever shot at point blank range in a feature film, but we never, hear another murmur from her.) : Good thing there is an arsenal of machine guns and ammunition on board, or you might have seen zinging life savers and noise makers rather than bullets in the big shoot out. Instead, a too-handy bevy of tumbling barrels renders the scene incredulous. For .those who missed the original film, there are enough special effects and cliffhanging scenes in 'Beyond the Poseidon Ad venture' : to make it . both exciting and entertaining. But for the rest of us, this lackluster sequel looks blandly familiar, r As for disaster-master Irwin' Allen, I hope tuere isn't any smouldering de bris" in that skyscraper he left behind.:'.;, TV COMPUUM somccs, MC UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU 4 Shelly Hack will star as Tiffany Welles, the new Angel in the hit detective-adventure series CHARLIE'S ANGELS, on Wednesdays on ABC-TV Ms. Hack is best known as the 'Charlie Girl" of Revlon perfume commercials. .
