SONNY WALKER TO SPEAK AT MOUNT GlLEAD
William "Sonny" Walker will be the speaker at
Mount Gilead Baptist Church for the 11 a.m. Men's
;Day Services. The Male Chorus will render the musje.
Walker is a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He is a
graduate of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He has done
graduate and post graduate study at Fisk University,
Southern University, the University of Oklahoma, and
:the University of Arkansas.
: His past work experiences includes high school
teacher, coach and guidance counselor, college instruc
tor, and announcer and public affairs director for a
radio station. -
: He served asDirector of the Arkansas State Office of
Economic Opportunity and Assistant to the Governor
of Arkansas. He was a Division Director for the United
State Department of Housing and Urban Development.
In 1972, he became Director of the Southeastern
; Region of the Office of Economic Opportunity, and has
continued in the same position with the Community Ser
vices Administration.
He is a member of many varied organizations in
cluding the NAACP, the National Urban League, the
YMCA, the American Society for Public Administra
tion and a past member of the Board of Directors of the
National Conference of Christians and Jews. He served
as chairman of the 1977, 1978 and 1979 Full Employ
: ment Conference Committee for the Martin Luther
King Birthday Celebration. He was Chairman of the
1977 Combined Federal Campaign; United Way
Speakers Bureau Chairman for 1978 and is currently
: serving as Vice-President of the Metropolitan Atlanta
United Way Board of Directors. He is Vice-Chairman
: of the Southeastern Federal Regional Council, the
: regional inter-agency body composed of chief regional
officials of 1 1 federal agencies.
Walker has received 4 honorary doctorate degrees
and is an honorary citizen of over 60 Southeastern
cities, and the recipient of numerous National, State
and Community Awards for leadership and public ser
vice including a Georgia Senate Resolution citing him as
one of the most outstanding public servants to serve in
the State of Georgia.
He appears in the 1975-78 editions of Outstanding.
Personalities of the South and Who's Who in Black
America.

Men's Day Services will be held at Oak Grove Free
Will Baptist Church, Sunday, June 17 at 11 a.m. and 6
p.m. services. Guest speaker for the 11 a.m. services
will be Attorney Roland Braswell. Guest speaker for
the 6 p.m. service will be Rev. Percy Chase, pastor of
Community Baptist Church. He will be accompanied

following the death of Dr. H. H. Hart. He began his

a.m. worship service featured Rev Lester Bake; The
Youth of the Year Award was presented to Ms. Betty
Johnson for outstanding services rendered in her church
; and the community. !
; Ms. Johnson was born in Durham and grew up in the
Crest Street Community. She is a graduate of Hillside
' High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts in
Business Education and her Masters in Counseling from
: North Carolina Central University.
Ms. Johnson is presently a member of the Young
Adult Ushers, the Centennial Choir and the Crest St.
Community,Council. She is chairman for the Centen
nial Program Committee at New Bethel.' 1
Ms.-Johnson is employed with the City of Durham as
a counselor in the Durham-Orange County Employ
ment Training Center. , . V
The program continued at 4 p. m. with Mrs. Beverly
Booth speaking on the subject ."Youth arid: their
Needs." A skit was performed ty the Young Adult
Department entitled "The Wages of Sin is Death."
