Says NCCU Not Ready For Dig Time Competition Commissioner Kenneth Free of the Mid-Eastern Atheltic Conference ' has issued a press statement charging that North' Carolina Central Universi ty's readmission to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference "indicates that they are not ready for big-tirne competition" and that Central's "major reason", for the decision "is to recruit players with high school averages less than 2.0." NCCU Vice-Chancellor-for University Relations, S. Dallas Simmorts, answered Free's charges. "North Carolina Central University is not out to recruit players with low high school averages. We believe, in fact, that we come as close as any other school in the conference in meeting the 2.0 criterion for our student athletes. "I do not know that the other shcools have told the NO A about the averages of their recruits. We will not falsify our records, and over the past two years we have admitted a few players with less than 2.0 averages players who meet Divisiorf II re quirements but not Divi sion I requirements. By far the majority of our players meet the 2.0 stan dard. "But the NCAA Divi sion 1 rule is that we must have been in, compliance with that standard for two years "before "applying for Division 1 status. , We can't' say that honestly. "Complying with the tworrJoint criterion is no ,more of a problem for NCCU than it is for any other member of the MEAC ; conference. We , come as near or nearer to complying , to this regula tion than jany other member. However, the NCAA requires ALL athletes to have th two point average before they may be recruited. The NCAA criteria also re quired the school to be in conformity two years before applying for the 1-AA classification." Simmons said, "I should hot have to remind Mr. Free that we will recruit athletes from the same pool and know what the academic record is of most of the athletes in the conference." Simmons sid, "The truth is that the MEAC is not ready for big-time col lege competition, to use Commissioner Free's language. The MEAC wants the label Division 1, not the reality, and we do not agree with that philosophy." ' Simmons, who was of fered an opportunity to examine the MEAC state ment, referred- tot he following language of the statement: "Free said it was not important to have the same, or .as many scholar ships as the larger univer sities because, they ould - not be awarded agam with them ' anyway and f f 1. f f V- i i , I f,'Sv- , 1111 ' i t , rrr!. fill ' f mam , & nr o ihiiwihiiiii iinim m Lout - hiiwhim -yrirr r" wiiomih in t rnnm i iin nm until mr maam Plummer League Scores Broken Rail CHAMPAIGN, ILL The long awaited meeting of defending NCAA 110 meter hurdles champ Greg Foster (r), of UCLA, and the world record holder Renaldo Nehemiah, of Maryland, )n the NCAA finals ended for Foster when he hit the sixth hurdle and broke it. As for the eight sports, Free siad if Central already has give, all they had to do was add corss country, in door, track, and sgolf..Plus, football and basketball are the only two spor,ts n the con ference with visitation re quifcments, which lessens the travel expense when a school has six other sports. These only have to meet the NCAA re quirements, and- then come to a MEAC cham pionship, with the winner moving on the NCAA competition." Simmons said, "That language proves clearly that the MEAC move .to Division 1 is bogus. Com missioner Free is sug gesting that the MEAC meet the competition stan-, i ;dards of Division . L by : pjayhing' only within the ' conference that the MEAC Pretend to be competitive with the ma jor schools, but never put itself to the test. - "As for the other sports, he is really sug gesting bogus sports, false programs. He's sayiqg, 'Don't bother to play the sport,' Nothing could be less fair to the players in those sports. We would be offering them a one or two day 'field day' activity not a sports program." ' Simmons said NCCU had no intention of con ducting programs which do not involve a full season of competition. "I have responded to the MEAC letters, filed the application for CIAA1 membership, and issued statements with respect to this , issue becaue i was delegated to do so by Chancellor Albert N. Whiting," Simmons said Free's" press statement,-' issued by his office on June 9, included this paragraph, "Free con tinued lo say that he is deeply disturbed by -the fact that none of the com ments or decisions concer ning Central's plight have come from the Athletic Director; the expert they hired to elad them out of obscurity." Simmons responded,"" "Obscurity? Is obscurity the right word for a shcool which has produced 33 professional football players, five professional basketball players, and a dozn Olympians or world record holders in track. Central was the first to: sign a football player to a pro contract, John Brown, Los Angeles Dons, and also the first to sign a basketball player to pro contract, Harold Hunter, Washington Cap." The press stated includ ed the comment, "Some of Central's athletic leaders continue to maliciously state that they were put out of the MEAC, however; the fact is tnat uthev refused to Team Standings: Sooners Jamin Peddy, Mary Hawkins Minnie Norris, Joe Parker; Rovers: Ilia Hill, Joe Garner, Ann Reed, Eric Roberson; Fireballs Ora Huey, Georgetta Parker, Howard Fitts, Doss Massenburg; Blasters Ruth McDonald, Ralph Wiley, Jim Dyer, Nancy Pinckney. VI will be delighted if the MEAC achieves the television revenue which was the basis in all discussions of the deci sion to become Division 1 . If must say that I will also be greatly surprised." ; Free's press statement ended, "To the loyal MEAC followers, Free re joyced (sic), 'We are definitely not going to fold, disperse, or slow down to any degree. We will go on with our four Division 1 institutions (NC A&T South Carolina State, Howard, Delaware S.tate), and I feel our ex pansion program will be enhanced by the simple fact that we are a Division 1' conference. Simmons answered, "I believe all our comments reflected the facts of the situation. No, we weren't put out of the conference, but we were told in a letter from; Mr. Free himself th"at we would be put out next May. We said we wouldnH make an effort to stay in' the con ference after that decision, but we will remain in the conference until May." Simmons said, "I hesitate to say this, but Mr. Free leaves me little choice. We elected to join the CIAA because we believe it is a much stronger conference. The CIAA is better-managed, has a stronger program of services to its members, and is far more successful in producing revenue from its championship tourna ment. "The MEAC will face severe difficulties over the they have my well wishes.'
