Their aim: to see what they could learn from "working,,marriages that would be useful in treating couples with problems. Their findings were more than a little surprising. - Writing in the July Reader's Digest, therapists Ellen Frank and Carol Anderson state that " We discovered that over ninety per cent of the couples had a less-than-perfect sexual relationship. Yet more.than eighty per cent rated their marriages as 'very happy' or 'happy.. . . Apparently, a sexual problem is not synonymous with a marital one." v The problems ran the gamut of sexual perfor manceimpotence, premature ejaculation, failure to reach orgasm were common. Yet "most people told s that their partner's performance was not as important as the feelings they bring or fail to bring to their sexual relationship." Other elements influence the sexual relationships fatigue, worry, disruptive children and job pressures, as well as psychological hangups from the past such as guilt, fears and inhibitions." " "But, negative feelings about sex don't seem to diminish a woman's feelings about her spouse or of her marriage," the therapists continue. And although the men report that their feelings of attraction to other women sometimes interfered with their sexual relation ships with their wives, they did not act on these fantasies by having extramarital relationships." , If your marriage is otherwise happy, but problems ex ist in your sexual relationship, communication is critical to the solution. "It isn't the amount or quality of sexual relations that makes or breaks a marriage, but rather the degree of Tit" between partners' sexuals needs and priorities,"they write. "Such mutuality comes only with communication," as well as a commitment of time and energy; they add. v ? But unless your partner or 'you feel particularly unhappy, maybe you should leave things as they are," vFrnfcradrAiiwoniconclude. ''Indeed, the prime ! conclusion we drew from) this study! is that sexual dif ficulties are normal and sex, per se, isn't crucial for a ' happy marriage." - You dont havt to borrow your neighbor' copy of THE CAROLINA TIMES Catt 682-2913 R.
