(Sorrier Experts Examine The Shroud of Turin by David Hazard On special occasions usually high holy days the peasants and townspeople of Turin would flock to the cathedral to see a rare, wondrous sight. Held aloft in hand-tooled reliquary was the mysterious shroud, bearing what many believed was the image of a crucified man possibly Jesus Christ. Today, interest in the shroud has spread throughout the world. Pilgrims and researchers are still flocking to Turin to see and examine the shroud on the rare occasions when it is displayed. During its last public showing, the Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc., produced a 90-minute documentary called, 'Shroud of Mystery.' The special telecast delves into the mysteries surrounding the ancient cloth reputed to be the burial wrappings of Jesus Christ. The 14-foot linen shroud bears the image ofxthe front and back of a crucified man. Dark stains around the scalp, on the back, at the wrists and ankles, and on one side of the chest suggest the blood stains left by a man tortured, Many people believe the 5-foot-7 image to be that of Jesus Christ since the wounded image exactly matches the description of Jesus after the Crucifixion around 30 A.D. as recorded by the Gospelists and contemporary historians. Startling findings ' Surfacing in the Middle Ages with a string of legends already attached to it, the shroud has long been the object of controversy. A team of top American scientists from research institutions like the Air Force Academy, the Jet Propulsion Lab, and Los Alamos Nuclear Testing Center are presently conducting sophisticated tests to determine the shroud's authenticity. The CBN special, filmed in Italy, England and several locations in the U.S., records their journeys and reactions. The preliminary observations and early findings of that experts are. startling. i; While the group does not expect to announce their conclusions until 1980, they theorize that the sepia image was imprinted on the cloth by an intense burst of light at the moment of Jesus' resurrection. Researcher and physicist Dr. Ray Rogers said, "If you ware God. how would you regenerate faith in a skeptical age T One way would be to leave evidence 2,000 years ago that we could only understand by the science and technology available in that skeptical age." The documentary records the widely divergent opinions of other experts including pathologists, historians and philosophers. Some, like British author and scholar Sir Malcolm Muggeridge, say the existence of the burial cloth of Jesus Christ would be "helpful, but -not necessary." Others, who set out to prove the shroud a hoax became committed Christians after their research as did a few of the-American scientists. Said one researcher, "The image (on the doth) is proportionally very good. It has to be a projected image. It would be miraculous if it were a forgery." The program is concluded with a discussion by Pat Robertson, president and . founder of CBN and internationally renowned author and educator, of the shroud's significance in our day.
