Gat:ze I!:!is Ennfy Prcr.: - 1 Experimental RefCOM plant produces itiethane gas from solid wastes and sewage sludge. Dollar-a-gallon gasoline and a potential fuel shortage are just two reasons why the nation is attempting to de velop and utilize alternative energy resources, including solid wastes. Solid waste resource re covery systems can obtain valuable energy from society's throw-aways, while reducing the volume of garbage re quiring land disposal. One company Waste Management, Inc. employs various resource and energy recovery technologies. The Illinois-based company: built and is operating the U.S. Department of Energy's experimental garbage-to-gas plant, RefCOM, in Pompano Beach, Florida. Each day, the plant can convert up to 100 tons of garbage and sewage sludge into methane gas through ia controlled bio-? logical process. RefCOM is short for Refuse Conversion to Methane. will participate in one of the country's largest pro jects to recover' methane gas from sanitary landfill. The project, near Chicago, is expected to provide enough methane gas during the next 20 years to satisfy the natural gas needs of 30,000 area residents. Among the most promis ing of the energy recovery processes is System V0lund, a Danish-designed combus tion and energy recovery technology. Mass combustion of solid wastes is the method which most reduces the need for sanitary landfill, while also providing energy. The Valund combustion system produces energy which can be used for heating or electricity produc tion. Each ton of incinerated refuse can supply the equiva lent of 4 to 8 barrels of heating oil. Vrfund systems have en abled Denmark to achieve the world's highest rate of energy production from solid wastes. Through the development of these and other technol ogies, many communities around the nation may find it possible to use their solid wastes to supplement their supplies of energy. "Wit consists in knowing the resemblance of things that differ and the difference of things that are alike." The fund is a non-profit organiza tion attempting to increase the number of Blacks. Puerto Rcans. Chicanos. Mexican Americans and American Indians enrolled in engineering schools. These under-represented minorities constitute a rich untapped resource to help fiH 'the growinpneed 'for engineers, a need that is expected to continue through the md-1980's. IBM 's social leave program enabled Dr. Henry to take a year 's leave to assist the fund And IBM continued to pay Ijim his full salary The National Fund 'for Minority Engineering Students is a very worth while program.
