They have been conducted among educators in the Durham community, among social workers, psychologists, and counselors, among parents and, finally, among pupils. These inter views were pompted by the recently revised city school board policy on spanking. While educators (principals, vice principals, teachers, deans, board members etc., (said that they did not oppose the North Carolina law on spanking, many stated that they did not think highly of spank ing as a disciplinary method. Many principals stated that they were im plementing more modern ways to achieve discipline. It was concluded from the interviews of social L. Jeffers workers, counselors and psychologist that this group did not rule out spanking entirely, but recommended it only as the very last method to achieve discipline Some of the parents said, "Maybe teachers should spank when all other methods to achieve discipline fail." Others ex pressed the opinion that teachers should not spank their children. All students interview- SALE BEGINS FRIDAY 10 A.M. WE'VE GOT TO MAKE ROOM FOR NEW FURNISHINGS ALREADY RECEIVED! Only two pupils interview ed said that they had been spanked only once during their, schooling. At least eighty per cent of the students interviewed said that they had never been spanked at school and that they had rarely been spanked by their parents. The imolications here may be that pupils whose parents reason with them and "talk over problems" can apparently be disciplined without being spanked. Another conclusion that can be drawn from hc student interviews is that students apparently have no faith in spanking and that pupils must respect any disciplinary method before it can be effective. The overall conclusion oh spanking from these in terviews is that the com munity is moving away from spanking for a more . effective, more modern method. Spanking," ' however, is a North Carolina law. The revised city school policy passed its final reading Monday night, November 26. Attached to the policy was a resolution introduced by board member Dr. Robert Ghirardelli which states, "The board wishes ;it understood that "in establishing this policy that it neither endorses nor encourages the inflic tion of corporal punish ment (spanking), but acts only to control such inflic tions within the con straints imposed by the statutes of North Carolina." Many principals say that some parents would rather have their children spanked than to honor re quests by school officials to visit the school or . to have their children suspended. No effective disciplinary method relieves parents of the responsibility of helping the school discipline their children. . jh ft it -. 1 ,s & 1 'i -v,-, oummiiicGS Formed For Mnmen's P.pntnr CHAPEL HILL-As an outgrowth of the highly successful organizational meeting for an Orange County Women's Center, working committees have been established and meetings scheduled.
