The Miller Brewing Company will sponsor its fifth annual Miller Hall of Fame Tennis Champion ships, July 7-13, at the historic Newport Casino in Newport Rhode Island. Considered to be a classic among the nation's professional tournaments, the Miller championships are the only major event held on grass courts in the United States. The Newport Casino has been the setting for seven major tournaments and was the site for the first U.S. Ten nis Championship in 1 88 1 . For the fourth con secutive year, former ten nis champion William F.. "Bill" Talbert will serve as tournament director. Talbert is also tournament director for the U.S. Open Championships. Last year, Brian Teacher defeated veteran Stan Smith for the singles championships in a rain delayed match. Smith and long-time doubles partner . Bob Lutz won the doubles crown. "We are extremely pro ud and pleased to continue our sponsorship of the Hall of Fame Tennis championships at the home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame," said Thomas B. Shrop shire, Miller senior vice president. "Our continued support of this major sporting event recognizes the public's enthusiastic response to the Miller Hall of Fame Championships and the tremendous tradi tion it represents." Construction of a 1400-seat grandstand last year helped to set new at tendance records for the week-long event, which annually draws many of the finest grass court players currently on the men's pro tennis circuit. This year's tournament will also mark the 26th an niversary of the Interna tional Tennis Hall of , Fame. The class of 1980 will be officially inducted ' on Saturday, July 12, dur ing the Hall of Fame Championships. Persons purchasing tickets to the Miller Hall of Fame Championships will be admitted free to the Hall of Fame exhibit areas. Tickets may be . reserved by writing to the Tennis hall of Fame, 194 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island, 02840, Cornerstone j Ceremonies Slated For Durham County Cornerstone-laying ceremonies for the new 33,850 square foot George Washington Watts Memorial Building will be held Sunday, May 25, at Durham County General Hospital. The Watts Building, so named in honor of the Watts Hospital founder, George Washington Watts, will serve as office space for hosptial administrative functions and for offices and classrooms of the Watts Hospital School of Nursing. Watts school of nursing functions are temporarily being housed in the former Watts Hospital building on Club Boulevard which is. scheduld to open as the North Carolina School of Math and Science this fall. Ceremonies are schedul ed for 3:30 in the after noon. The public is in-, vited. Articles of historical significance are to be seal ed inside the cornerstone. George Watts Hill, grand son of the Watts founder, will present the articles for inclusion in the stone and George M. Trout, chair man of the hosptial cor poration building commit tee will accept.
