6 THE CAROLINA TIMES SAT , JUNE 21, 1880 State Heart Association Tennis Championships Set For Friday CHAPEL HILL -Two hundred and two players will participate in the finals of the North Carolina Heart Association-Northwestern Bank State Tennis Cham pionships, beginning Fri day June 20 at 10 a.m., at Chapel Hill Tennis Club, it has been announced by Judy McKaughn, Hickory, chairman of the Tournament Committee. Ben T. Craig, Chairman of the Board of the Nor-! thwestern Bank, and Robert E. Thurber, 1979-80 president of the North Carolina Heart ' Association, will present torphies to the winners and finalists on Sunday. Champions will be deter mined in men's and women's singles and doubles, mixed and mixed 35 doubles, men's and women's 35 singles and doubles, men's and , Hula Hoop Contest Set To Begin Next Week Talented whirlers of brightly colored Hula Hoop toys will soon begin their creative gyrations as more than one and three quarter million boys and girls throughout the United States compete in the 13th annual Wham-O World Hula Hoop Con test. Activity in Durham will begin the week of June 23 at playgrounds, Fun Caravan sites, day camps and centers operated by the Durham Parks and Recreation Department. Youngsters wishing to participate should contact Gaston Patterson, Jr., at the Parks & Recreation Department or the neighborhood playground or center. Boys and girls will com pete in two age levels, 11 and under or 12 through 15, performing such maneuvers as the Knee Knocker, Alley Oop, Hula Hop, the Stork and Wrap the Mummy, plus a one minute freestyle routine they create themselves. Boys and girls champions in each category will be eligible to progress to the State finals. The site of this year's World Championship j finals will be the Miami Seaquarium in Miami, Florida on September 6. Awaiting the World Champion is a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond scholarship award, with $500 and $250 in scholar ship bonds going to the se cond and third place finisher respectively. Each regional champion is awarded a $100 U.S. Sav ings Bond. This competition is be ing sponsored by the Durham Parks & Recrea tion Department and Wham-0 Manufacturing Company of San Gabriel, California. Canine Contest Set For June 22 Dogs of all breeds and sizes with a talent and zest for catching platters will soon have their day with the 1980 Cycle K-9 Frisbee Disc Catch & Fetch Con5l test At Parks & Recreation Centers throughout the United States. More than 750 U.S. communities have registered for participa tion in the events schedul ed to get underway this month. Local, state and regional finals will lead toward possible qualifica tion to compete for the World Champion Title at famed Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on August 24. Awaiting the 1980 World Champion is a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. Additional bonds and prizes such as supplies of Cycle Dog Food will be award ofsther levels of competition. Contest format will qualify each dog for the next level of competition who completes a specified number of catches within a set time limit at a minimum distance of 15 yeacds from a throwing circle. One point is award ed for each catch, .two. points are given for each catcher where all four paws are off the ground. A free style competition will be added at the Regional and World Finals. The same thrower (no age limitation) must com pete with the dog throughput the City, State and regional finals, and a special K-9 Frisbee Disc provided by Cycle Dog Food will be used at all levels of competition. There are no age, breed or sex restrictions for competing dogs. The leash laws will be observed at all competitions, and each dog entered will be re quired to have a valid license and proof of rabies vaccination where re quired by local ordinance. The makers of Cycle Dog Food are co sponsoring the 1980 Durham local competition with the Durham Parks & Recreation Department. The local qualifying round and City finals will be held Sunday, June 22, at the Forest Hills Park located on University Drive. Registration and warm-up will begin at 2 p.m. The State qualifying round and finals will be held in Durham again this year at the same location. Participants are the winners from 84 local tournaments and fourteen district playoffs held throughout the state this spring. Results at the State Championships which are sanctioned by the USTA, will count toward North Carolina rankings for 1980. Top seeds are Jim Haslam, Greensboro, Number One, and Art Scott, Chapel Hill, Number Two, in men's , singles. In the women's singles, Pat Brogden, defending champion, of Goldsboro is seeded Number One, while Carol Cobourn, Chapel Hill, is second seed. Jeff Barnhardt and Semi Mintz of Rock ingham are seeded Number One in men's doubles, with Bill Ashley and . Jimi Roueche, Greensboro, seeded Number Two. The team of Jean Elderidge and Peggy Sheehan, Winston Salem, are seeded first in women's doubles, with Mary Salisbury, Pineville, ! and Wendy Wilson, Mat thews, seeded second. The mixed doubles team of Rick Herring and Pat Brogden of Wayne Coun ty are seeded Number One in that event, with the Raleigh team of Robin and Linda Gardner seeded Number Two. The North Carolina Heart Association, a member of the USTA, and the Northwestern Bank are co-sponsors of the event. All proceeds from entry fees paid to enter the first round of the statewide tournament were contributed to the Heart Association.
