It has been reported oa
good authority that the
'Special Review Committee
at UNC-CH, set up
December 14, 1979, to
review the- tenure pro
cedings for Dr. Sonja H.
Stone, recommended Fri
day, June 19, that she be
given tenure.
Dr. Stone was first
denied tenure because of
the negative recommenda
tion of Dr. Samuel
Williamson, Dean of the
School of Arts and
Sciences, February, 197?,-
Dr. Stone, who was
then director of the Afro
American Studies Cur
riculum arid the
Southeastern Black Press
Institute at UNC-CH, ap
pealed the decision to the
Board of Trustees on the
grounds that she had been
a victim of racism and sex
ism. The Board of Trustees
found Williamson inno
cent of the charge of
racism and . sexism, but
ordered a special commit
tee to be formed because it
questioned the objectivity
of the previous committee
that had been formed by
Williamson for Dr.
Stone's tenure review.
While there has been no
official announcement
from the special commit
tee, present actions that
are now being taken in
dicate that a postitive deci
sion has been reached. It
has been reported that Dr.
Ralph Strayhorn, chair
man of the Board of
Trustees, said that had a
negative decision been
reached, it would not have
been necessary to send a
recommendation to the
Faculty Advisory Com
mittee and the University
Instructional Personnel
Committee. The report
also stated that Dr. Stone,

! OR. STONE
who is on fellowship at
Ohio State University with
the National Center for
Research in Vocational
Education, confirmed that
she has received a postive
decision by telephone..
The two committees
that have received the
recommendation have no
veto powers, but it was
reported that supporters
for Dr. Stone expressed
grave concern since some
of the members who serv
ed on the initial committee
that gave the negative
recommendation also
serve on the committee
! that has now received the
recommendation. It is not
clear what roles these
committees will play in
making the recommenda
tion official.
Mrs. Haynes, Dr.
Stone's mother, commen
ting on the report, said,
"we are very happy; this
decision was made possi
ble because of the support
' we received from
organizations, both local
and national, and from in
dividuals who assisted in
her (Dr. Stone's) appeal."

Wachovia's new 30 Month Savings Certificates offer you a
number of investment benefits, including high yield, guaranteed
return and convenience. Once your certificate is issued, the rate
does not change during the term of the certificate. You have the
option of having your interest paid monthly, quarterly or at matu
rity. Certificates are issued for $500 or more. And your money
is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation up to
$100,000. Federal regulations require a substantial interest penalty
for early withdrawal of these deposits. However, if you have to
make an early withdrawal your Personal Banker can show you ways
to keep your money working so any interest penalty is minimized.

Wachovia To
Franchise
Estate
Program
Wachovia Rank and
i Trust Company announc
ed recently that it plans to
franchise its comprehen
sive estate settlement ser
vices program to banks
around the country.
James M. Gregg, senior
vice president and
manager of Wachovia's
Personal Trust Depart
ment, said that Hartford
National Bank has pur
chased exclusive rights to
the program for the State
of Connecticut and that
negotiations are under
,way with another lafge
. bank in the Northeast.
Wachovia introduced
the program in North
Carolina last year, and it
jhas drawn the attention of
imany banks in other
J states. ''The program is
.quite a departure from the
way most trust depart
ments have operated in the
past," Gregg said. "It
'permits lawyers and exec
tuors to use a bank's
estate settlement services
even though the bank is
not named in the will."
The program consists of
valuation, adminstration,
management and tax ser
vices, and it enables a
bank to provide as few or
as many services ' as a
lawyer or executor may
need to settle an estate.
