FRIENDLY CIRCLE CLUB
On Sunday, July 20, the Friendly Circle Club of St.
Mark AME Zion Church held its monthly meeting with
Grover Burthey, 1019 Elmira Avenue. Mrs. Helen
McNeil presided. Mrs. Dazel Stevens, Mrs. McNeil and
Mrs. Florence Littlejohn conducted devotions.
Following the business session, the host took the
following members out to dinner: Mesdames Helen
McNeil, Sarah Cameron, Juanita Barnes, Florence Lit
tlejohn, Louise Frazier, Dazel Stevens, and Lena
Thompson. Mrs. Barnes thanked the host for an en
joyable evening.
LEGIONNAIRES TO HONOR BOYS
AND GIRLS STATE REPRESENTATIVES
The Weaver McLean American Legion Post, No. 175
and the Ladies Auxiliary, will sponsor a program on
Sunday, August 3, 3 p.m., at Union Baptist Church,
904 North Roxboro Street, honoring the young men and
women who represented the Post and Auxiliary at the
1980 Boys and Girls State Seminars held in June in
Winston-Salem and Greensboro.
The honorees are: Misses Laura Arnette Bridger, San
dra Delores Clement, Emily Ann Page, Angela Tanita
Hinton, Alicia R. Daniels; and Kenneth Washington, all
of Hillside High School; Vance Brown, Northern High;
James Ray Dempson, Jr., Southern High; and Franklin
D. Boone, Jordan High.
The public is invited. There will be music, a group
picture and refreshments.
COMBINED PICNIC
On July 19, the Friendly Ladies Club and the
Household Of Ruth sponsored a picnic at the Forest
Hills Recreation Center. Games were played and Mrs.
Gladys Washington won first prize.
The two groups entertained a few friends from
Durham and special guests: Miss Clara Jones, Macon,
Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. Hauqq and children of Spr
ingfield, Mass.
HYATT-MILLER REUNION
Over 100 attended the Hyatt-Miller Reunion held in
Detroit, Michigan, July 4-8. On the Fourth, a family
picnic was held in Inkster; July 5, a banquet was held
welcoming the family. Mrs. Minnie Cromartie received
a prize as the first to register; July 6, the family worship
ped at the New Light Baptist Church. A second banquet
was held where guests were recognized.
Attending from the Durham area were: Mr. and Mrs.
King Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Perry, Mrs. Fannie
Rowland, Mrs. Minnie Cromartie, Mrs. Julia Higgins
and Mrs. Lula Hester, who visited a cousing, Mrs. Ruth
Lee of Port Huron, Mich.
The group returned to Durham on July 8.
LOCAL MASONS TO HOST STATE
GRAND CONVOCATION
The North Carolina Grand Convocation of the Holy
Royal Arch Masons will convene July 26, 27 at the
Durham Prince Hall Masonic Temple on Cook Road.
Most Grand Excellent High Priest Clyde Alexander will

quet speaker.
On Sunday, the Grand High Priest Breakfast will be
held at 8 o'clock. Church service will begin at 1 1 o'clock
at Morehead Avenue Baptist Church with Bro. Compa
nion Rev. B.A. Mack, pastor as speaker.
Companion James C. Black is chairman of the plann
ing committee for the Grand Convocation.

Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Parker and three sons have
returned home to Maryland after spending three weeks
vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Parker and Mrs. Phoebe Cozart, all of Bahama.
The P.A.C. monthly meeting held Wednesday, July
15, at Whitted School building, was presided over by
Joseph Parker. Mrs. Tessie Jones was the speaker.
There will not be an August meeting.
Ricardo Privette, Jr., who is stationed at Altus Air
Force Base, Oklahoma, spent several days leave with his
bride, Mrs. Kaye Turrentine Privette, recently. Mrs.
Privette is a rising sophomore at East Carolina Universi
ty and is now attending summer school.
Family Day was observed last Sunday at Red Moun
tain Baptist Church, Rougement, at which time eleven
candidates were baptised. The pastor's parents, Dr. and
Mrs. Paul H. Johnson, and their entire family of
Raleigh and Durham attended. Rev. Cureton Johnson is
the pastor.
The Durham County Missionary Union will hold its
meeting at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, South Rox
boro Street, on Sunday, August 24 at 3 p.m. Reports
will be presented from the Baptist Women's Home and
Foreign Mission Convention and of the nominating
committee. West Durham Baptist Church, Athens
Street, will be the site of the meeting on Sunday,
September 28, at 3 p.m. Mrs. Georgia Thompson will
give all reports from the Lott Carey Foreign Mission
Convention which will be held in Columbus, Ohio.

Chapter presented a $500

of the Negro Braille
Magazine. The periodical
is published twice yearly
and sent, without charge,
to some 600 international
recipients.

support of the publication
founded 28 years ago by
Durham resident, Mrs.
Lyda Merrick.
At the urging of John
Carter Washington,
himself nonsighted, Mrs.
Merrick worked tirelessly.

in June, 1952.
