I 12 THE CAROLINA TIMES Triangle To Be Marketed As Region The concept of marketing the Triangle area as a region as a pro spective center for business and industrial expansion has been en dorsed by the Triangle J Council of Government's Economic Development Policy Advisory Commit tee. The Committee urg ed, however, that any marketing concept should be sensitive to the individual needs of the TJCOG's member coun ties. TJCOG's member counties include Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Orange, and Wake. The Commit tee endorsed the concept in its quarterly meeting this week. How the region is to be marketed or how the pro gram is to be funded has not yet been determined. James V. Camp, direc tor ot Economic Develop ment for the Durham Chamoer of Commerce and a member of the Regional Policy Advisory Committee, presented an overview of the North Carolina Department of Commerce's proposed Urban-Regional Marketing Program at the meeting. The state is proposing to market nine such metropolitan areas in the state, including the Triangle J region. Chapel Hill Mayor pro tern Jonathan Howes strongly urged the state to integrate local govern ment into the planning for its marketing pro- gram. Howes pointed out ' that the TJCOG has just completed an extensive economic assessment of : the region with the aid of the Research Triangle In stitute. Data from this, study will reveal the uni que economic characteristics and trends of the region which need to be con sidered by the state. Committee member Robert P. Pace, Cary developer, added that the six county area did , not have adequate space to , accommodate . . the quality growth desired through the proposed i marketing effort without I careful planning and in- vestment strategies. The issue of the i regional marketing pro- gram concept was ad dressed at the full coun cil meeting of the TJCOG on October 22.
