About three hundred educators gathered at Terry
Sanford High School recently to honor the Fayetteville
City Schools Teacher of the Year for 1980 Mrs.
Emaretta Felton and alt the nominees for that title.
Mrs. Linda Lee, a? Johnston County native and
English teacher at Cummings High School in Burl
ington, was the guest speaker. Mrs. Helen Pierce, the ci
ty's outgoing Teacher of the Year, presented awards.
Mrs. Edwina Gross, National Vocation Teacher of
1980, and Ms. Paris Ann Moore, the Terry Sanford
award winner, were honored. 4 f
We applaud Harold G. Sejlars who has been pro
moted to compliance officer for the United Carolina
Bank. -;
The Youth For Christ Choir of Lewis Chapel Mis
sionary Baptist Church, 5422 Raeford Road, will
celebrate its sixth anniversary Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Ms.
Daniela Curry, 15, will be featured in concert.
The International Toastmistress Clubs met for the
day Saturday in Smithfield. Members, delegates and
guests gathered from Ralejgh, Durham, Fayetteville and
surrounding areas.
Mr. and Mrs. Archie Smith announce the engagement
of their daughter, Harriette Elaine, to Isaac Lee Coley,
son of Mrs. Elizabeth Coley of Wilson, and the late Mr.
Coley. A March 15 wedding is planned at Hoods Chapel
AME Zion Church. The bride-elect is a 1977 graduate
of North Carolina Central University. She is a captain,
in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Langley Air Force
Base in Virginia. The prospective bridegroom is a
technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force,

' The Fayetteville Observer carried an interesting arti-
cle about Mrs. Kathy Forshee, a retired educator of 39
years service, 26 in the Fayetteville area and thirteen in
Harnett County. Her husband is an army veteran. Mrs.
Forshee wants to compile a book of students' work and
maybe write a book on African history. She plans to
travel and teach Bible School in the summers. She had
the experience of teaching many grade levels. She receiv
ed her B.S. degree from Fayetteville State University
and the M.A. from New York University in Language
and Social Studies.
The Displaced Homemakers project is now accepting ,
applications for its program which begins Monday and ;
runs through Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call;

Thurman Whitted, Jr., a senior biology major, has
been awarded the Dean J.C Jones Memorial Scholar
ship at Fayetteville State University. The scholarship
was established two years ago in memory of the late
dean of students at FSU, and is supported by voluntary
contributions. ,

Youth Council are scheduled to usher for the "People
Caring For People" program which is to be held on

Dr. Mary Elizabeth Mason can be heard on Sunday at
9:45 a.m., at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She is
director of Personal and Family Counseling of the
Cumberlannd County Division of Social Services. She
will speak on "Positive Parenting ih a Changing
World."
Fayettevillians mourn the death of the Rev. Warren
Lewis Coachman, 56, pastor of - Piney Grove Baptist
Church in Raeford, of 606 Lakeland Drive. Rev.
Coachman was actively involved in the Civil Rights
movement during the 1960's'and was a former president
of the NAACP chapter here. He was also chairman of
the 13th Precinct and encouraged efforts to build a
housing complex in Dunn. He was pastor of St. John's
Baptist Church in Dunn for ten years.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at
Swann's Creek Baptist Church.
Sympathy is extended to his wife, Mrs. Euretha
Elliott Coachman, his three sons, five sisters, two
brothers, and other family members.

La Petite Gardeners were delightfully surprised oi
learning that Mrs. Billie Curry Greenwell of Atlanta,
Ga., gave the fabulous New Year's Day Brunch for the
Club in memory of her mother, the late Mrs. Essie M.
Curry. Mrs. Curry was an outstanding charter member
of La Petite Garden Club. The brunch was catered by
Sylvester Saunders.
Mrs. Mary C. Grant, club secretary, wrote Mrs.
Greenwell a letter of thanks expressing appreciation
from the club for such a kind and thoughful way of
showing love and concern in giving such an elaborate
meal on this special day.
