' TUSKEGEE, AL.
(NNPA) It was an
nounced by Melvin a
Glasscr, chairman of the
Tuskegee Institute Board
of trustees, that Dr. Ben
jamin F. Payton was
unanimously elected as the
fifth president of
Tuskegee Institute by its
Board at a meeting held in
New York City on March
4.
Dr. Payton will succeed
Dr. Luther H. Foster, who
is completing 28 years in"
the presidency of
Tuskegee Institute. Dr.
Payton will take office
August 1, 1981, during a
historic period as
Tuskegee celebrates its
100th year of educational
service and leadership.
Presently program of
ficer, Education and
Public Policy, The Ford
Foundaiton in New York
City, Dr. Payton was
chosen after a year-long
search, because of his
wide range of experiences
and leadership in higher
education as well as
general administration, .
and for his commitment to
black education and
scholarship.
Dr. Payton, a former
president of Benedict Col
lege in South Carolina, is
. a graduate of South
Carolina State College,
received the B.D. degree
from Harvard University,
the M.A. degree from
Columbia University, and
the Ph.D. from Yale
University. He is married
and has two children.
President Foster said
that the increasing cost of
education and the
likelihood of limited
public and private funds
in the years immediately
ahead provide a major
new challenge to Tuskegee
Institute in maintaining its
leadership in higher
education during its se-
cond century of service.
He commented further
that the election of an ex
perienced educator, such
as Dr. Payton, will help'
ensure continuing strong
educational leadership
and service by Tuskegee
Institute in the years
, ahead.
CSBC Assists
Atlanta Families

The newly formed
Committee to Save Black
Children, (CSBC) based in
Washington, D.C., has
announced plans to assist
the most needy families of
the deceased children in
Atlanta, Ga., and the for
mulation of a local cam
paign to accelerate con
gressional intervention to
assist in the investigations.
The Committee will
sponsor several benefits to
raise funds for those
families that are experien
cing emotional and
psychological trauma due
to the sudden deaths and
disappearances of Ntheir
children.
The CSBC pubrclj(
deplores he virtual "open
season," that has been
called upon black children
in Atlanta. The group is
also lending its voice to
the many others who have
called for additional
federal support in man
power and finances to
hasten the solution of
these crimes.
Spokesman for the
group, Ms. Carolyn
Mason, explained 'that,
"It Is important to the;
members of the Commit
tee that we each make a
personal statement
though our efforts about
ho v deeply we have been
moved by this senseless,
violence on black
children. These children
could have been the son,
' daughter, brother or sister
of a member of any of our
families. We mourn as a
people, a nation."
Other CSBC objective
include support for the
Atlanta based Committee
to Stop Children
Muurdcrs, whose primary
gtial is to thwart future
child disappearances and
murders. The Atlanta -group
is also conducting
community semminars to
promote increased safety
procedures.
