by Michael Smuin, one of;
America's renowned
choreographers and a co-j
director of the San Francisco!
Ballet. The results of
Smuin's creative and artistic'
application will air live from
San Francisco's War
Memorial Opera House on
Monday, March 30 at 8 p.m.
On Center Channel 4. This
performance by the San
Francisco Ballet is part of
"Dance In America" on
Great Performances.
When "The Tempest
premiered tost spring, noted
New York Post critic Clive
Barnes said " 'The Tempest,'
so far as I can see, makes
American ballet history. It is
the first, full-length,
American classic ballet ever
to be created from scratch, . .
. and Smuin dares with an
imagination that runs happi

Maryinsky to Las Vegas."
"The Tempest" is Smuin's
translation of - Elizabethan
prose into the graceful for
mat of ballet. The colorful
cast of characters brings
royal blood into conflict with
spirits, magical powers and a

Arts Orchestra of San Fran
cisco will be led by the
Ballet's own conductor,
Jean-Louis LeRoux.
