Masterpiece Celebrates
Tenth Anniversary
Masterpiece Theatre will
celebrate its tenth anniver
sary with a 22-week "Festival
of Favorites," a selection of
highlights of a decade of pro
gramming which will ; air
beginning May 3 at 9 p.m.
"The Ciolden BbwlV, a
six-parr dramatization of
Henry James' psychological
novel by Jack Putham, who
also wrote the teleplays for
"I, Claudius" and "Crime
and Punishment," will kick
off the "Festival." "The
Golden Bowl," first
presented on Masterpiece
Theatre in 1973, stars Jill
Townsend (she. married
Francis in "Poldark") as
Maggie Verver and Barry
Morse as her rich father.
- Also on the retrospective
schedule is Balzac's "Cousin
Bette" (1972), the story of a
woman's revenge that is
generally considered the first
of the naturalistic French
novels. Playing the title role
in the five-episode drama is
Margaret Tyzack, who made
her Masterpiece Theatre
debut ten years ago in the
drama series; first presenta
tion, "The First Churchills."
The "Festival of
Favorites" will also reprise
"Sunset Song" (1976), Lewis
Grassic Gibbon's novel
about the maturation of a
l-year-old farmer's
daughter, Chris Guthrie, one
of the great heroines of Scot
tish literature. Vivian
Heilbron stars as Chris, a
young girl forced as she
grows up to choose between
her physical, sensual, emo
tional instincts and her in-
