Hayti: To Renew .
Or Not To Renew -
(Continued From Front) k . ;
Havti renewal particularly in light of the
Downtown development - the Hayti Development
Corporation (HDC) was formed. "
AVa non-profit corporation, ftj 1 o ttt
whatever ster)s are feasible to redevelop the Hayti
area and to galvanize support for a renewal of th?
area to meet the needs of southeast Durham .ud. at
the same time, support the growth of the area to its
fullest potential. - .' , , ;
The redevelopment plan of the HDC looks at
Hayti as an extension of downtown and would
redevelop the area north of the expressway as an in
dustrial mall serving all of Durham, but with
greater opportunity for black participation.
The old Service Printing Company building
would be converted into a museum, book store,
restaurant, and office space surrounded by a park
area. The building is architecturally sound and easi
ly convertible (e.g., Brightleaf Square) into a monu
ment to the old and a bridge to the new Hayti.
South of the expressway is envisioned a hotel
restaurant complexa large food'store, a variety
store, specialty shops, barberbeauty shops, phar
macy, hardware store, retail clothing stores and
much more. A small business mall is also planned to
support old and new businesses alike. (Housing
would also be added south of expressway.)
The economic loss to the southeast Durham com
munity has been devastating arid support from the
. community and city will be necessary to bring about
these changes. Other cities in North Carolina
(notably Charlotte, Winston-Salem and High
Point) have developed plans to renew their
"Hayti's" and those cities are moving ahead.
As it's motto, "Together Durham Can Soar', in
dicates the HDC believes that many of the old
wounds can be healed if all of Durham is allowed to
grow and prosper. , . '
The challenge is, however, that narrow interests
for only one section will operate so as to keep the
whole city from progressing.
The growth of the tobacco industry, at the ex
pense of other development, retarded Durham's
long-term growth. Many believe that if the city can
help renew Hayti, as well as Downtown Durham,
the whole city will prosper and citizens will be able
to live together in new found harmony. This is the
challenge to renew or not to renew the whole city-Large
numbers of citizens have expressed the
hope that the new Council and mayor will have the
.broader vision to move Durham toward the 2lst
'century.
