Pryorh Lighting1 Matches Again

popularity,; has just released one 'Of the most irresponsible .
movies of all time. ; - . . "". i
I've been a Pryor fan for a long time. I 'can stand behind him .
when he says it is time to bury the word J'nigger" for good, V;
.that it's no longer a fair jest between blacks. He's had a lot of
. messages and he's-not been afraid to stand up and sell them.
This time he's sold out.r?'Some Kind Of Hero" is a slap in the ;
.face to anyone who has ever worked his way through college,
paid his dues for a good job and created something solid for i
himself and his family; White audiences that see the film may j
. reinforce negative stereotyping. A-. i x. I
- "Hero''starts out as a stunningly sensitive 'tragi-comedy .
about a. Viet Nam POW Who gets ripped off by the army and j
comes home to find his wife unfaithful and Ms mom recovering ;
from a stroke It's heavy 'stuff for comedy, but'the laughs are
subtly and superbly delivered. , 1 .
The brilliant first half in fact, is so well done that it must be
blamed for selling the conclusion's anti-social message. Pryor '.
goes for revenge and the jnovie rarely gets funny again. His j
pathos, as he fumbles one stick-up after another, barely holds j
the plot together. Finally, he makes a score that sticks.
What Pryor advertises loud and clear to his young fans is that
it's OK to rip off the establishment if you've been dealt a bum
hand. He goes further and suggests one will get away with it! :
This is a vicious message to. dump on a Reaganomics Spring.
WhcV is Pryor lighting the matches for? "Some Kind Of Hero" j
leaves some kind of bad taste. .. ' , ' -
. Incidentally, Margot Kidder plays a two-dimemsional hooker ;
turned girl friend and takes a fast slide from the notoriety of her
Lois Lane character in VSuperman'! to a guaranteed nowhere. .
' Scared? You can be certain I was." When the i2-foot monster ,
jumped out of nowhere in a dream sequence from "The Hob
bitt," my heart nearly stopped. And then we all laughed.
- I was sharing a school matinee of an oversize puppet show by
, the Theatre Sans Fll at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Per
forming Arts, Seejng J.R.R. Tolkien's story in the company of
an all-children audience is refreshing; kids laugh in different
places. Adults have been sneaking into the evening perfor
mances, I hear. ' , :
"Hobbitt" is a part of a two-week Imagination Celebration
with art, storytelling, theatre, dance, music and puppetry, an ex
tension of the Kennedy's Center's on-going National Children's
Arts Festival. The education department of the Center has work
ed since 1976 to stimulate Fine Arts for children nationally. :
; Many of the productions wil be on tour in outreach festivals;
Milwaukee April 24, Marin County, California April 30 and;

A special feature this year is the original opera for children, ,
"A Bride From Pluto' by Gian Carlo Menotti, commissioned
i- by the Kennedy family in memory of the late President.
Stephanie Mills played a pivotal role in a marriage. Seems
Polygram considered her vital to the roster in signing a distribu-.
tion agreement with 20th Century-Fox Records. Her new album,
'"Tantalizingly Hot;"wUl be out May JO; the first product under
the new deal. Other acts in the package, however, include the
Chi-Lites, the Dells and Carl Carlton.
1 Billboard Magazine, the 88-year-old grande dame of the
music industry, in trouble? The trade paper recently fired dozens
of employees in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville and per
mantly closed the Chicago office. Included in the sweep were
high ranking editorial staffers. Competitors Record World and
CasHbox are rumored to be in worse shape.
Remember the incredible jazz vibraphonist Red Norvo? He's
still around, with a touch softer than air on silk, playing Charlies
in Georgetown recently. Sidemen were guitarist Tal Farlow and
bassist Steve Novosel. Norvo was a force in the twenties! .
George Washington frequently dined at Gadsby's Tavern in
old Alexandria, Virginia. Two hundred years later, the quaint
pub still operates as one of the best moderately priced
restaurants in the D.C. area. A new publick table on Sundays
and Mondays is superb!.
