925 Alpha Kappa Alpha women from North
Carolina and Virginia convened at the 29th annual
conference of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Hostess
chapters were Phi Omega and Gamma Lambda of
Winston-Salem. "::f-:--:;Z :::y :;
This year's theme, "Influencing Decisions: A
Design for Action In the 80's" was addressed by
Dr. Barbara K. Phillips, national president of AKA
in her greeting to the membership. Dr. Phillips
: stressed that "It is indeed necessary that we put our
personal actions and involvements on the line and
influence decisionsduring the 80's. . . .May we
deliberate and develop strategies which will put us
on the cutting edge of the uphill battle toward pari
ty. Influencing Decisions: A Design for Action Inn
the 80's, is a theme of challenge and hope. It is upj
to each of us to give it meaning and sustenance." !f
The conference was filled with interesting and in
formative sessions. Many useful tips were gleaned

District Oratorical Contest was held in Sanford at
the First United Presbyterian Church. Rev. Wood
ward is pastor.
The master of ceremonies for the contest was
Brother S.L. Peterkin, Raleigh. Greeting was given
by Brother Eddie Evans, E.R. Security Lodge No.'
688 and Dgt. Carolyn Pearson, Dgt. Ruler, Morn
ing Star Temple No. 615, Sanford. The occasion
was given by Dgt. Florine Moore, Dgt. Ruler of
Capital City Temple No. 3 10, Raleigh.

' Henderson, Sanford and Raleigh.
Miss Yvette Page of Raleigh was winner of the
oratorical contest.

The Hayestown Senior Citizens met Monday,
April 19, at the Hayestown Community Center

The home was beautiful with gorgeous house plants
and beautiful spring flowers.
Mrs. Saunders opened opened the Garden Gate. '
After the formal opening, Mrs. McCrea. president,
since that time and has served in every office in the
Lodge. In 1937, he was elected Exalted Ruler and.
served in that office for three years. During his ad
ministration, the membership increased from ten to
69 members. The lodge purchased it's present'
building with the down payment loaned by Vance.
It has undergone some remodeling since that time.
Brother Vance next held the post of District
Deputy, Fifth District, for fifteen years. He was "
elected first vice president of the North Carolina
Elk State Association and served for eleven years.
He is a member of the State Presidents Council, the
Baxton E.R. Council, Grand Shrine, Director for '
Hobson Reynolds, Elk's National Shrine for the
State of North Carolina, treasurer of Mamie Hicks j
Fez Club, chaplain for the Fifth District Assembly. ; :
Other affiliations are with the Laodicea United
Church of Christ, formally Manly Street Church,
Where Vance is a member of the Men's Bible Class.
He is an ordained Deacon and has been on the
Board for over forty years. He is a member of.
Master Mason and served as treasurer of Mento
Lodge No. 55 for twelve years.
Vance is married to the former Ms. Hattie Daye.
They have two daughters, Mrs. Almetta V. Parker
and Mrs. Betty J. Chisolm; a son, Officer James E.
