Gcorfife White Would Have Voted For Michaux
Legal Notices
Legal Notices'
By Joseph E. Green .
If George White had
been alive Tuesday, ;
more ' than likely he
would have voted for;
H.M. , "Mickey"
Michaux fn the. 2nd
district congressional
race. .i1.- ; ;
.White, who was the
last black congressman
from North Carolina to
serve in the U.S. House'
of Representatives would
not have voted for the
Durham lawyer because'
he., is black. Rather, j
White, who served in I
Washington near the end
of the Reconstruction I
period, would have :
voted for Michaux
because White believed
experience made a suc
cessful legislator,-. :
Before going io
Washington; he served in ;
the North Carolina State ;
House' as Both ; a!
representative and as a;
senator. He- also served j
the state as its solicitor, t
winning a state-wide race '
in 1886. . i
Michaux, himself a
former state represen
tative and United States
Attorney, once said, "I
want to go to Congress
to complete the unfinish
ed business of George
White."
White's business was
rough.
He was the only blacky
member of Congress'
when its 55th session'
convened on March 15,
1897, and he came on
board near the end of the
Reconstruction period
when white southerners:
were moving swiftly to:
re-enact anti-black laws,
regulations and customs..
They were soon to find
allies in the Republican
Party, White's own
political colleagues.
Thus White spent his
two-term political career
(1897-1901) fighting off
what noted black.
historian John Hope
Franklin once , called
"the reinvigdration of
the old order," j
. White ; fought'
courageously. .'; '.ifi. a-- ,. -''
For example, accor-'
ding to " Maurine!
Christopher in her book
Black Americans in Con--gress.
White faced issues
head on. "Addressing,
the Republican state con-;
vention in July, White!
exhorted blacks to de-l
mand their fair share of
jobs from their political
party." - .
White also attracted;
many enemies . . '
.. . , Again, ; Christopher '
. notes: "Qn February 5,1
1900, during the first ses-j.
sion of the - 56th Con-i
gress, he (White) asked'
ihe clerk to read an in-:
suiting editorial about j
him (White) from the ;
Raleigh ' News &
Observer.; 'It" is bad;
enough that North
Carolina should have the;
only nigger Con-i
gressman...' the article;
began... His behavior j
was cited as proof of the
absolute necessity for
permanent white rule in,
the state."
But White fought on,;
and in what he
understood to be his
farewell address to Con
gress on January 29,
1901, White "...bade
farewell on behalf of a,
heartbroken, bruised
and bleeding,
but. ..faithful, in
dustrious, loyal people
who Phoenix-like would
return to Congress..."
In the case of
Michaux, White's pro
phecy has come to frui-:
tion.
The two , men have
much in common. White
was a lawyer, like
Michaux; White had a ,
keen interest in educa-'
tion, as does Michaux;
and, White, like
Michaux, had a : wnom the Civil War was ,
mustache. . i ' fought, but not for a ;
.0Brn on December 18, part 5f the Union. '
; 1852 in Rosmdale, Whi e He was the last black .
completed his early to serve in the U.S.1
education here and then House 4 until ' a Con--went
to Howard Univer- . gressman from niinois.

Helpful Hints For Getting The Best Results
If your home is like
many, mildew can be a grow
ing problem on painted sur
faces. In warm areas with
high humidity,- mildew
growth can be particularly
acute on house exteriors.
Fortunately, there are
some things you 'can do
about mildew. ' v .
Before starting to. paint
your home, it is first essen
tial that all mildew be re
moved. Here's how to
identify and remove it.
Mildew and dirt look
very much alike. But, mil
dew; grows in colonies of
uf ,M'
C&Mjf'Of ;
el to
dark brown "splotches," and
close inspection will tell you
that it is a fibrous organic
growth. "
Remove it by washing
with a solution of
two ounces of ho
detergent and two
chlorine bleach add
one gallon of water. Scjub
vigorously to remove heVy
mildew growth, then rirVj
thoroughly with clean
water preferably from a
hose. Cleaned surfaces
should be painted as Soon as
they are completely dry to
guard against a recurrence
of the growth.
