First Quarter Earnings Up JACKSONVILLE, FLA, Following a , record year in sales and earnings, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., reported an 9X pet cent increase in sales and an 8.6 per cent advance in earnings dur ing the first quarter of new fiscal year 1983, the shareholders were told at the annual meeting recently. A.D. Davis, vice chairman of the Sunbelt's largest foot retailer, said overall sales during the quarter ended September 22, 1982, amounted . to S1,582,824,0W) com : pared with SI. 465,356,000 during the same period last year, a gain of $117,468,000 or 8.0 pei cent. Earnings per share were 84 cents versus 77 cents, while total earn ings increased to $20,773,000 from $19,133,000 achieved during the comparable period last year. "The first quarter results were on top of 48 consecutive years of sales increases," Davis ex plained, "with earnings having increased 32 out of the past 34 years". Commenting on first quarter results, Davis said, "Although our new store program has slow ed down due to tight money, we have ag gressively enlarged and remodeled proven store locations to increase sales per square foot in our retail facilities. Of 1,228 stores, 953 have been enlarged or remodeled in the past 7 years. With increased emphasis on display space devoted to general merchandise items, we, expect to continue to in-' crease sales and earnings and produce a satisfac-' tory return on invested capital." Davis explained that although the company realized record earnings in excess of $103 million for fiscal year 1982, ear nings were less than the $104 million lpaid into the Federal Social Security program by the company and its employees." The company an nounced the retirement of Directors C. Keith Funston, Ben Hill Grif fin, Jr., Joe Adams and M. Austin Davis, all of whom served many years as members of the board. All other direc tors of the company were re-elected by i he shareholders, iiul Charles P. Stephens was elected to fill the va.anc created by the retirement of M. Austin Davis. Following 'r shareholders' mcetim:. the directors declared dividends of 20 cents per share payable on com mon stock and Gass B common stock on Oc tober 29, November 30 and December 28 to shareholders of record on October 15, November 15' and December 10, respective ly.
