For' Detecting Asbestos! ttally u By Janet Pierce Frye , A .new technique for measuring -iron-coated asbestos fibers n the lungs . could . play, a significant role in future lajwmts concerning the diagnosis of .asbestos related diseases, say two medical scientists at v Duke University Medical . Center. 'pr-: ';';,;:tv:.: i. The two pathologists have developed a techni que ; for counting the :oated asbestps fibers in samples' of lung tisjme. Th;eir technique is an ef fective screening method that requires much less lung tissue and is simpler than the tissue method currently used. "Techniques for measuring asbestos fibers are very important in medical-legal situa tions where a patient has asbestosis, scarring of the tissue throughput the lung, or mesothelioma (cancerous tumors on the lungs)," said Dr. Victor Roggli, an assistant pro fessor. "Based on the nufnber of fibers found, we could say whether the tumor is likely to be related to asbestos." The new technique was developed by Roggli and Dr. Phillip Pratt, Duke professor and, director of laboratories at the Veterans Ad ministration Medical Center; They also developed an equation for deter mining the approximate number of asbestos fibers in thC entire lung. Based oq their equation, if two asbestos fibers are We Welcome Your Church News found in a 5 micron tissue section (approx imately . the . size of a, quarter and thinner than a sheet, of paper), then there would be an estimated 200 fibers per gram of lung tissue. - This would' be more than 10 times the number of asbestos fibers found in a gram of normal lung J tissue, Roggli said i Pratt was a member of dl said, n 'but ust small numbers, from 0 tc 20 in a gram or lung tissue, in contrast, peo- piC Wliu nave aaucamaia may have from a few thousand, to more than a million asbestos fibers in a gram of lung tissue. If we find two asbestos fibers : ' on 4 . one microscopic slide, fronts statistical point of view, that's much more than you expect from the the National Committee general population. for Pathology Standards for Asbestosis sponsored by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. That committee recently decided that the presence of two asbestos . fibers in a tissue section and , scarring around small airways in the tunc is minimal evidence for diagnosing asbestosis.
