KEN NEDY Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Lillian Spaulding Ken nedy were held Tues., Jan. 28, at White Rock* Baptist Church with Rev. Lorenzo A. Lynch of ficiating. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy, daughter of the late Benjamin Mclver Spaulding and Mrs. Margaret Ann Virginia Moore Spaulding, was born Feb. 9, 1892 in Columbus County (NC). She died Sat., Jan. 25, at her residence. She was educated in the public schools of Columbus County and “Durham and attended Barber- Scotia Seminary in Concord. Following graduation from Cheyney Normal Teachers, Mor ton, Pa., she taught home economics in the public schools of Morton and subsequently returned to Durham and was employed by North Carolina Mutual and Provident Associa tion. On Dec. 27, 1917, she was mar ried to the late W.J. Kennedy, Jr., who served as chairman of the board and president of N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Company, and preceded her in death on July 8, 1985. She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church and its Philathea Sunday School Class and Sarah T. Edwards District. She served as superintendent of the Cradle Roll for 22 years. She was a member of the Volkemenia Literary Club, Daughters of Dorcas, the Quet- tes, the Year-Round Garden Club, Women-In-Action, life member of the YWCA, the Board of Directors of the John Avery Boys’ Club and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Kennedy Good win and Mrs. Charlotte Kennedy Sloan, both of Durham; a son, William J. Kennedy III; four grandchildren, Mrs. Marsha Goodwin Ree, William J. Ken nedy IV, Maceo K. Sloan and Mrs. Sylvia Sloan Black; four great grandchildren, Frederick H. Black Jr.; Shana Black, Maceo S. Sloan and Malia Sloan; and a foster daughter, Ms. Patricia Castle. Arrangements were by Fisher Funeral Parlor. GEORGE L. KING Funeral services for George L. King were held Sat., Jan. 25, at Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Z.D. Harris of ficiating. Burial was in Glenn- view Memorial Park. He was a son of the late Mrs. Hattie Woodard and Rev. J.T. King, born June 20, 1916 in Cumberland County. He died Mon., Jan 20. He attended the public schools of Method; served in the U.S. Ar my and was honorably discharg ed in 1946; held membership in Bull City Elks Lodge No. 317. He retired in 1978 from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 30 years employment. LODIS LANDIS Funeral services for Lodis Lan dis were held Sun., Jan. 26, at Rocky Spring Baptist Church with Rev. William Gooch of ficiating. Burial was in the family cemetery. He was a son of the late Joseph and Mrs. Emma Landis, born April 16, 1907. He died Wed., Jan. 22, at Durham County General Hospital. Suriving are two daughters, Mrs. Elvera L. Parker of Durham and Mrs. Annie Kate McCoy of Morristown, NJ; two sons, Raymond Landis of Greensboro and Elton Landis of Dover, NJ; a brother, Pender Landis of Creedmoor; 11 grand children and nine great grand children. WILLIAM A. JOHNSON Funeral services for William Austin Johnson were held Sun., Jan. 26 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with Rev. A.T. Alston officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was a son of the late Ms. Annie Mae Patterson and adopted parents, the late Thomas Johnson and Mrs. Margie Johnson, born June 27, 1932. He died Wed., Jan. 22 at Duke Hospital following a long illness. He was a self-employed con crete finisher for several years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gertie L. VAMPLE Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Vample were held Mon, Jan. 27, at Ellis D. Jones Funeral Chapel, with Bishop Harvey Dewberry officiating. Burial was in Glennview Memorial Park. She was a daughter of Mrs. Margaret Mack and the late Babe Mack, born May I, 1939 in Durham County. She died Tues., Jan. 21, at Duke University Medical Center. She was married to the late James Vample. Surviving are four children, Victor G. Mack and Ms. Gwen dolyn Mack, both of Durham; Ms. Ann Mack and Ms. Marcia Vample, both of New York; her mother, a niece, Ms. Willie Brown and a nephew, Leroy Robinson, both of Sparks, Ga. Arrangements were by Ellis D. Jones & Sons Funeral Home. JAMES S. JONES, SR. Final rites for James Sterling Jones, Sr. were held Tues., Jan. 28, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Bahama, with Rev. O.L. Sherrill officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was a son of the late Thomas C. Jones, Sr. and Mrs. Annie Moore Jones, born May 9, 1925 in Durham County. He died Thurs., Jan. 23, at the Burn Unit in San Antonio, Texas. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, and had served as teacher and assistant superintendent of the Sunday School; president of the Usher Board for many years; and sang with the Male Chorus. He was a World War II veteran. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucille Turrentine; two daughters, Mrs. Victoria J. Joyner of Durham and Ms. Lisa Jones of the home; five sons, James Jones, Clifton . Mrs. Betty Darden presided. Gifts were given to the three peo ple who answered the most ques tions. Mrs. Ophelia Chadwick gave the welcome address, Mrs. Dosie Skinner was in charge of the dinner with Mrs. Marie Truitt assisting. Rev. Jackson Truitt of fered the Grace and prayer. Carols were sung. The president played Santa Claus by distributing gifts from under the Christmas tree. Members brought gifts for their guests and others and exchanged them. Guests attending the dinner were: Mmes.
