Sports Column (Continued From Page 5) Goes to show you that the NCAA is only for things that will help the organization. Troubled Horford Lands In Florida MIAMI —Tito Horford, all 7 feet 1 of him, has begun settling in at the University of Miami as his five-month recruiting ordeal has skidd ed to a halt. Horford, considered to be potentially one of the greatest basketball players ever, has been compared with Patrick Ewing and Akeem Ola- juwan, two other centers who migrated to the United States and found fame and fortune. Miami got Horford, a 19-year-old freshman, by default, after his original letter of intent was voided by the NCAA in August and after Horford was kicked off the team at LSU in November for allegedly missing practices. All that activity multiplied the pressure on Horford, from the Dominican Republic, and he went into hiding, refusing to talk with reporters. But after signing with Miami, Horford came out and squirmed through a packed news conference at the school. On the advice of school officials, he would not discuss any of the controversy that has dogged him. “I came to the University of Miami because it is a brand-new pro gram, and 1 feel like I can do something for them, and they can do something for me,” he said. “1 am very glad that everything is over because during the last few months 1 have been having some hard times.” The University of Miami, whose most famous ex-basketball player is former NBA great Rick Barry, has just resumed playing the sport following a 15-year hiatus. Horford is easily the school’s top recruit ever. Horford, who moved to the United States in 1982 to attend high school, averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds arid six blocked shots per game at Marian Christian High in Houston. He was named to virtual ly every prep All-America team, touching off a heated recruiting bat tle. Once Horford left LSU, schools picked up the chase again. Horford had a friend contact the University of Miami, and the Hurricanes im mediately joined the fray. According to NCAA rules, Horford must sit out a year because he is transferring from another school. However, the Hurricanes intend to ask the NCAA to allow Horford to begin playing at the start of next season. At worst, Horford would not be able to begin play until next January. Horford, already a top pro prospect, has already begun practicing with Miami. Many other schools were interested in Horford, but the negative at tention Horford has received over the last few months turned off some schools, including Kentucky, UCLA and Louisville, all of which declined to take Horford. to make its new anti-drug policy stick, has banned forr Hawks star John Drew from playing in the league for tw It was a devastating blow for Drew, who has earned m million during his NBA career but is now said to be virtual! Last summer. Drew was arrested for writing bad checks i City, Utah. He becomes the first NBA player to be banned from the its “three strikes and you’re out” drug abuse policy. Ol have come close, including New Jersey Nets guard K Richardson and Houston Rockets guard John Lucas. Drew, who once earned $300,000 a year in the NBA, but $500 a week while playing for the minor-league Wyoming' has had recurring problems with drugs. The NBA decided! after he recently petitioned the league for reinstatement. The NBA noted that Drew has been treated three tim abuse,, the latest session coming last summer, when Drt days at Salt Lake City’s Highland Ridge Hospital. However, Drew’s attorney, Tom Rasmussen, said I negatively for drugs while at the hospital and was clean thr stay there. Furthermore, Rasmussen said. Drew was orden the hospital as an alternative to a jail sentence for his charge, not specifically for, drug treatment. Nevertheless, because part of Drew’s stay at the facili mandatory drug treatment, the NBA has decided to bar! “1 feel I was used as a scapegoat,” Drew said. “I’m not cept that and forget about it. If I felt it was done right 1 w it. But I feel 1 was treated unjustly.” Drew, 31, will not be able to play again until the start of season, and the long layoff could effectively end his can NBA teams reportedly prepared to offer Drew a contrac cleared by the NBA, including the Washington Bullets.
