Virgin Artists Clean Up On
Billboard’s Year End Charts
Virgin recording artists
played a major role in shaping
the music and charts of 1989, as
documented in Billboard’s
annual "Year In Music" issue.
Led by Paula Abdul whose
close-to-quintuple-platinura
debut album "Forever Your
Girl" yielded three consecutive
tfl singles Virgin acts from
-Neneh Cherry, Soul 11 Soul, and
Inner City to Roy Orbison and
Steve Winwood and beyond,
placed among the best of the
year in an amazingly wide array
of formats, from pop and rock
to R&B, dance, and aC.
In the pop categories, Paula
Abdul was Billboard’s #I
Female Pop Album, tmd. Female
Pop Singles artist fof_ {{le .yepr;:'
She also placed two singles
"Straight Up" and "Cold
Hearted" in the year’s Top 10,
and another, "Forever Your
Girl," in the Top 30, making her
the a3 Top Pop Singles artist of
the year overall. Her album,
"Forever Your Girl," was also
ranked in the Top 3 for the year.
On the Black charts, Paula was
among the year’s Top 10 new
artists, and among the Top 30
Black artists overall, with great
showings on the Top Black
Singles and Top Black Albums
charts. In the Dance and
Crossover charts, Paula also
a fine showing, with hits
on virtually every otic Cf
Billboard’s various tallies in
that category..
..‘.Sow ;ir Soul 'had_ an
impressive showing in the year
end Black, pop, and dance
charts, with the incredible feat
of landing both the top 2 spots
on the 12-inch Singles charts
with the #1 "Keep On Movin’"
and #2 "Back To Life". The
group, led by Jazzie B, is still
going strong with their
platinum-plus debut album
"Keep On Movin’" and the new
single "Jazzie’s Groove".
Neneh Cherry made quite a
splash with her two Top 10 hits
"Buffalo Stance" and "Kisses
On The Wind," both from her
debut album "Raw Like Sushi".
Her newest single, "Heart," is
^mrently climbing the charts

ready for the top m two.
Steve Winwood continued
his dance on the charts with
singles from his’1988 Virgin
debut album "Roll With It". His
single "Holding On" was
among the year’s top Adult
Contemporary hits, and, overall,
Winwood was among the year’s
top Pop Singles artists as well.
Look forward to a new album
from Winwood in late 1990.
Roy Orbison’s "Mystery
Girl" album released in January
1989, shorUy after his death put
him back in the pop and AC
charts, where his single "You
Got It" was among the year’s
Top 10, according to Billboard.
Other new and developing
acts, including After 7, Inner
City, and When In Rome, also
placed in Billboard’s year end

of these artists in 1990 and
throughout the decade.
As a label. Virgin won the
distinction of being the #1
Dance label, and was among the
majors in most other label
categories, placing in the top
echelons of the lists.
