Harvey Gantt To Be Awards Day Speaker Harvey Gantt, the former Charlotte mayor who is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Sen. Jesse Helms’ seat, will be the speaker for North Carolina Central University’s Awards Day exercises at 11 a. m., Friday, April 6. Mr. Gantt will speak to some 400 NCCU students who are being recog nized for academic achievement, community service, or extracurricular leadership, and to an audience of other students, faculty members, and par ents attending the university’s Parents’ Weekend, The exercises will be at R. L. McDougald Gymnasium. Mr. Gantt has been described as the probable frontrunner in the May Democratic primary. Mr. Gantt was the architect for NCCU’s Albert N. Whiting Criminal Justice Building. Dr. Ruth Kennedy of the NCCU EngUsh faculty, chair of the Awards Day / Honors Convocation committee, announced Mr. Gantt’s selection as Awards Day speaker. Peat Marwick Main Donates Computers, Software The Peat Marwick Main Foundation, through the Raleigh office of the accounting firm of Peat Marwick Main, has given North Carolina Central University’s School of Business computer hardware and software valued at $38,000 for use in the school’s Accounting Program. Included in the ,gift were six Apple McIntosh SE computers with hard disks, two LaserWriter printers and associated hardware, three computer modems, and spreadsheet and word processing software for the computers. Raphael N. Thompson, coordinator of the school’s Accounting Program and associate dean of the school for graduate programs and corporate relations, said the school will now be able to require computer exposure for students in its beginning accounting courses. Mr. Thompson said Ronald Batchelor and James Talton of Peat Mar wick Main were instrumental in arranging the firm’s gift to NCCU, Mr. Talton is managing parmer in the Raleigh office of the firm. Mr. Thompson said Charles Asubonten, a recent NCCU accounting graduate and a successful candidate on the CPA Examination, has recently joined Peat Marwick Main in its Raleigh offices.
