JOHNNIE JOHNSON
Funeral services were held SaL, March 24, at Scarborough & Hargett
Memorial Chapel for Johnnie Johnson.
He died March 19 at Durham County General Hospital.
He was bom December 14, 1933, a son of the late Mrs. Mary Jane
Johnson and Bennie Johnson.
He was a member of the Kyles Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. He served
on the men’s usher board, and the choir. He was a member of the North
Durham Social Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Debbie O’Bryant and Ms. Judy
Ann Johnson; three sons. Shelly O’Bryant, Delmonte O’Bryant and
Curtis O’Bryant; six sisters, Ms. Leah Wigfall of Durham, Ms. Wincie
Webb of Winston-Salem, Ms. Sadie Bames and Ms. Blonnie Thomas of
New York, Ms. Floree Palmer and Ms. Norma Brown of Goldston, N.C.;
five brothers. Garland Johnson of Durham, Monroe Johnson of Goldston,
Ben Johnson and Donald Johnson of New York City, and Caldwell
Johnson of Winston-Salem.

MRS. VIOLA NANCY ELLISON HARRIS
Funeral services were held Fri., March 30, at Russell Memorial C.M.E.
Church for Mrs. Viola Ellison Harris. Rev. Jane W. Diggs, officiated.
Burial was in Glcnnview Memorial Park.
She died Match 27, at Duke University Medical Center.
She was bom June 2,1902, a daughter of the late Reverend Samuel and
Mrs. Vinnie Ellison.
She was married the late Walter Harris.
She was a member of Faucette C.M.E. and its Stewardess Board.
Sravivors include her daughter, Ms. Rosa Carpenter of Durham; six
sons, Lonnie Harris, Rev. Weldon Harris, Dennis Harris, ChSster Harris,
all of Durham, Rev. Arthur Harris of South Ozone Park, New York, and
Sylvester Harris of Rego Park, New York.

MRS. ESSIE MABEL HALL
Funeral services were held Thurs., March 22, at Covenant Presbyterian
Church for Mrs. Essie Mabel Hall. Rev. George F. Neal officiated. Burial
was in Beechwood Cemetery.
She was bom January 3, 1893 in Goldsboro. She was the twelfth child
of sixteen children bora to the late Mrs. Catherine and John Miller.
She was educated in Goldsboro. As a young adult she moved to
Baltimore, Maryland, where she married the late Colonel Arthur Hall.
Survivors include her daughter, Ms. Beulah M. Caldwell; three
grandchildren, Yvonne M. Bruno, Alexine Miller and Hansomai
Harriford; a niece, Alice Whitley; and two great-grandchildren, Dexter
and Carlos Bruno.

MRS. MARY DANIEL
Funeral services were held Sun., March 25, at Zion Temple U.C.C. for
Mrs. Mary Daniel. Rev. D.J. Squires officiated. Burial was in
Beechwood Cemetery.
She died March 21, at Duke University Medical Center.
She was bom April 2, 1909, a daughter of the late Sam and Mrs. Hattie
Edgerton, in Wake County.
She was a member of Zion Temple U.C.C. for over 50 years. She
worked with the Pastor’s Aid, The Missionary Circle, and The Deaconess
Board.
Survivors include her husband, Shellie Daniel; five daughters, Ms
Elizabeth Williams, Mrs. Helen Bryant, Mrs. Barbara Rohadfox, Mrs.
Margie Powell, and Mrs. Carolyn Gurley; three sons, Gilmer Daniel,
Roselle, NJ., Willie Daniel, Mt. Holly, NJ., and Wilbert Daniel,
Cranford, NJ.; two sisters, Nb. Nellie Hayes and Mrs. Ruth Mills; and
one brother, Samuel Edgerton.

MS. CHRIZZELLE EASTERLING
Ms. Chrizzelle Easterling, 606 Martha St., died SaL March 31, at Duke
Universiy Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Sat., April 7, at 1
p.m. at Fisher Memorial United Holy Church. Bishop Elroy Lewis and
Elder Hal Royster, will officiate. Burial will follow in Glcnnview
Memorial Park.
Ms. Easterling, age 57, was a native of Hoffman, N. C. and received
her education in the Diuham City Schools. She was employed at Duke
University Medical Center until booming disabled.
She joined the Gospel Tabernacle United Holy Church (now, Fisher
Memorial Holy Church) in 1943 under the leadership of the late Bishop
H. L. Fisher, and served with the Missionary Department and Turner
Bible Class. Also, she was a member of NCCU Area Garden Club,
Prospect Chapter #379 O.E.S., Order of Cyrene Cmsaders, Maria Court
No. 1.
Survivors include a son, Timothy L. Eastarling of Durham; a daughter,
Mrs. Gwenetia E. Reid of Greenville; three grandchildren; five sisters,
Ms. Hazel ITTsrling, Mrs. Sarah Green and Ms. Mildred Easterling, all
of Durham Mrs. Mary McKeithan of Hoffman and Mrs. Eloise E.
Thomas of Bronx, N. Y.; five brothers, Willie Gibson, Alexander
Gibson, Ezikiel Easterling and Walter Gibson, all of Durham and George
Easterling of Hoffman.
Tha Family will receive firiends Friday evening from 7 to 8 at Fisher
Memorial United Holy Church.

MRS. BEATRICE FELLERS COLEMAN
Funeral services were held Sun., April 1, at White Rock Baptist Church
for Mrs. Beatrice F. Coleman. Rev. Lorenzo A. Lynch officiated. Burial
was in Glcnnview Memorial Park.
She was bom October 17, 1923, the only child of the late Lee and Mrs.
Georgia Fellers.
Mrs. Coleman graduated from the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing
(Durham) in 1946 and later pursued graduate studies in nursing at North
Carolina College (North Carolina Central University). She was
employed as a nurse at Lincoln Hospital for a number of years and in the
office of the late Dr. C. D. Grandy, before joining the staff of the
Veterans Administration Hospital (Durham) where she served for 25
years, retiring from the nursing profession on August 18,1984.
She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church.
She was also a member of the Lincoln Hospital Nurses Association; the
Star of Hope Chapter #659, O.E.S., P.H.A.; the W. D. Hill Senior
Citizens Bowling League and Sunshine Club, and she served as a
volunteer to senior citizens at the W. D. Hill Recreation Center.
Survivors include one son, Eldridge Richard Coleman, III of Durham.

He was bom Sept. 12, 1899 to the late Cupid Pringle and Mrs. Anna
Pringle.
He was a member of Greater Saint Paul Baptist Church,
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ola Pringle; one sister, Ms. Goldie
Pringle; and one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Pringle Scott.

WILLIAM EDGAR LYONS
Funeral services were held Wed., March 28, at Scarborough & Hargett
Memorial Chapel for William Edgar Lyons.'
He died at home in Bahama March 23, after a lengthy illness.
He was bom April 10, 1904, to Ms. Hattie Faucette, in Durham
County. He was the foster son of Maynard Lyons.
He was a member of Mt. Level Baptist Church
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bettie P. Lyons of the home; three
daughters, Mrs. Helen Holmes and Ms. Arlene B. Wright of Huntington,
N.Y., and Mrs. Gwen L. Roundtree of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons. Babe
R. Lyons of Durham, and Eli Brandon of Atlanta, Ga.

EBENEZER COMES BACK — In the spring of 1989, theft
Durham experienced the most devastating tornado in its history.
Ebenezer Baptist Church 2200, South Alston Ave. was in the J
path of the tornado. Consequently, it was almost destroyed. Sim
time, the church has been in a constant straggle to restore the bnilJii
its original state.
On Sunday, April 8, the congregation of Ebenezer will gather a
church site for a grand march in celebration of return to the chtitdi 1
will also be Ebenezer’s "annual homecoming" day. The return maj
the reconstructed building will be a wonderful event for Ebenezer, n

Ebenezer is most appreciative of having its community lejj

spiritually and financially during its time of distress.
The celebration of returning to the church, by having a grand mm

Homecoming Service at 3 p.m., all on the same day will be tfi,

MRS. MARQUETTA JOHNSTONE

Memorial Chapel for Mrs. Marquetta Johnston. Rev. W.E. Daye

She died March 25, at Durham County General Hospital.
She was bom May 30,1930 in Newark, New Jersey.
Survivors include three children, Howard Johnson, Ms. Cheryl Johnson
and Gilbert Johnstone, all of Durham; three sisters, Ms. Nellie Brown
and Ms. Effie Brown of East Orange, NJ. and Mrs. Frances Bell of
Durham.
