Soidiers Can Get Recorded Christmai
Message In Philip Morris Cards
RALEIGH (AP) - Troops
stationed in the Middle East will
get Christmas cards this year
containing recorded messages from
friends and family at home, paid
for by the Philip Mortis Inc.
cigarette brand’s ittarketing
division.
Though the card has only a small
Marlboro trademark on the back, its
cover and winter cowboy motif
inside feature scenes similar to
those used to advertise the
cigarette.
The American Cancer Society
wants Philip Morris to rein in the
project.
"This sounds like a move to
recruit smokers," Joann
Schellenbach, spokesman for the
society in New York, when the
card was described to her. "The
cowboy has almost become a
symbol for Marlboro." Some
Marlboro ads with rugged
cowboys, she said, do not even
mention the product’s name
because of the strong symbolic tie.
Yet a Marlboro spokesman said
she saw no resemblance between
the cards and Marlboro ads. The
card is not intended to promote
sales in any way, but is merely a
public service, said Sheila Banks in
New York, media affairs director
for Philip Morris USA.
Technicians will visit 10 military
bases this week, including Fort
Bragg and Camp Lejeune in North
Carolina, where anyone may record
a message that will be inserted
upon a liny computer chip inside a
Marlboro Christmas card. The
recording plays when the card is
pressed.
Ms. Schellenbach said improving
the tobacco industry’s image
seemed to be the primary motive
for the cards.
"If they were really that
concerned about this country, they
would be more concerned about the
400,000 people who die annually in
the United States because of
cigarette smoking," she said.
Mrs. Banks said the card did not
c.'tiry the Surgeon General’s
wanting messages, as required by
law on cigarette advertising,
'ituausc the card was not an ad.
