Africans brought to the United

"My resolution will not fix the
lingering injustice resulting from
slavery but reconciliation begins
with an apology," said Rep. Tony
Hall, D-Ohio. "I hope this apology
will be a start of new healing be
tween the races." Rep. Joseph Pitts,
R-Pa., was one of the co-sponsors.
"It is never too late to admit we
were wrong and ask for forgive
ness," he said Thursday after intro
ducing a resolution of apology.
Rep. Maxine 'Waters, D-Calif.,
who heads the Congressional Black
Caucus, said black lawmakers
would be watching with interest.
"This is not a discussion for
African-Americans, this is a discus
sion for whites," she said. "Our role
in thi.-^ is to observe." Waters
praised Hall for making the at
tempt, saying he will have ac
complished something even if the
full Congress fails to endorse his
resolution.
"When I have you calling me
about whites apologizing for
slavery, that’s the kind of attention
that’s needed to have this country
come face-to-face with some of the
pain of our liistory and some of our
fallout even today," she said.
"You can’t lose with discussion
like that. 1 think that you cannot
lose when people finally confront
pain and anger and disappointment
and polarization." Hall introduced
the measure as the White House
prepared for a major presidential
speech on the subject of race, but
said the timing was coincidental.
"I’ve been working on this for
about a year and a half," he said,
explaining that as part of his work
with anti-poverty and anti-hunger
groups, "This issue keeps coming
up - racial conciliation." "I feel
there are great barriers and fences
between us and I think a lot of
times that goes back to slavery,"
Hall said. "1 thought, ‘Well, let’s
get going on this.’"

Donors Swamp Blood Facility
To Help Betty Shabazz
By Jim Fitzgerald
NEW YORK (AP) - A spur-of-
the-moment blood drive drew an
overOow crowd to a narrow base
ment hallway in Harlem, where
donors said they wanted to give
something of themselves to honor
Malcolm X’s critically burned
widow.
"As little as it is, giving blood is
something that I can do,” Maria
Collado said. "I believe in what
Malcolm X believed in.” A few
miles to the north at Jacobi Medical
Center in the Bronx, Betty
Shabazz, 61, remained in critical
condition, more than a week after
she was severely burned in a fire
that police say was set by her 12-
year-old grandson.
"The only thing I can do for her is
give my blood, so that’s what I’m
doing," said Elwinn Penn of Man
hattan as he waited his turn in the
stuffy. low-ceilinged corridor. "She
meant everything to me. Malcolm
X was a great man and his wife is a
wonderful woman." The response
to the spur-of-the-moment blood
drive quickly swamped the small
facility set up in the basement of
the Carver Federal Savings Bank
on West i25th Street. Extra staff
was called in and the canteen table,
where donors get juice and cookies,
was moved to make room for more
of the gurneys on which donors lay
while a pint of blood is taken.
Waiting time was up to two hours,
but few donors left.
"She’s been through so much,"
said Maria Wilson, a lifelong Har
lem resident who was giving blood
for the first lime. "Betty is a role
model, a great lady. ... I’d like to do
whatever it takes/' "When I heard
about this last night, I knew I had
to come," said Candy Wright of
Manhattan. "I feel honored to be
able to give blood." By the end of
the day, 263 pints had been donated
and 99 more people had offered but
were deferred said Linda Levi of
the New York Blood Center. Elinor
Tatum, associate publisher of The
Amsterdam News and organizer of
the blood drive, said it would con
tinue.
Like many at the bank, she was
wearing a purple ribbon to show
support for Mrs. Shabazz.
Ms. Tatum said she organized the
blood drive because "I didn’t know
what I could do. For a woman who
gave so much, this is a way to give
back." Mrs. Shabazz, of course,
will get whatever blood she needs
for the ongoing, excruciating oper
ations to replace her charred skin.
The donated blood.will go into
the supply for the metropolitan
area, said Miss Levi. People donat
ing, she said, "arc giving in honor
of Mrs. Shabazz." Each donor
signed a get-well card, which
would he forwarded to the Shabazz
family, Ms. Tatum said.
A prayer vigil for Mrs. Shabazz
was held at the hospital and was at
tended by hospital staff, members
of the public, several clergy and
students and faculty from Medgar
Evers College, where Mrs. Shabazz
works, according to a statement
from the hospital.
Mrs. Shabazz’s grandson, Mal
colm Shabazz, is in Juvenile
custody for allegedly setting the
June 1 fire that caused ihird-degree
burns over 80 percent of her body.
Malcolm X was assassinated in
1965 as his wife looked on from
the audience of a Harlem ballroom.
