DEBORA DAVIS Two services were held for Ms. Debora Cookie Davis (1) Saturday, January 24, at Scarborough Memorial Chapel and (2) Sunday, January 25, at- Rivers Funeral Home. Trenton. She died Tuesday, January 20, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, Interment was in Mill Run Cemetery, Trenton. She was born February 28, 1961 in Trenton, a daughter of Louis R. and Mrs. Edna Louise Davis. She was an honor graduate of Jones Senior High School. She earned both the LPN and RN licenses from Durham Technical Community College. She worked as a nurse for 19 years at Duke University Medical Center until April 2001. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are three brothers, Carlton R. Davis of Vanceboro, Clifton L. Davis of Durham and Herman L. Davis of Trenton; four aunts, Mses. Ada and Vera Davis of Trenton, Ms. Isabella Volpe of Jamaica Plains. N.Y., and Ms. Louise Crupp of Pough keepsie, N.Y.; an uncle. Car! FANNIE MAE GEER BARNES Final rites for Mrs. Fannie Mae Geer Barnes were held Wednesday, January 21. Rev. J.H. Lewis presided. She died January 16, at the age of 99 years. She was the daughter of the late Florence Montague and James Wesley Geer. She was born, reared and attended public schools in Dur- ham. She was a longtime member of St. Matthews CME Church (later be- came Russell Memorial CME). She transferred her membership to Prog ressive Holiness Church, Inc. where she was a member of the Mothers Board. She organized and was the first president of the Grade Mothers of Lyon Park Elementary School, a staunch leader in the PTA and Parole Mother for Lyon Park School, She organized tite first garden club in her area. She was the mother of the late Benjamin B. Rogers, Jr., Ernest E. Barnes, Jr. and James D. Barnes and grandmother of seven grand children, one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild. Williams presided. Interment was in Markham Memorial Gardens. He died Thurs day. January 8, atTreyburn Healthcare Center. He was born September 5, 1915 in Fremont, N.C., a son of the late Wyatt and Mrs. Priscilla Yelverton. In 1962, the Yelverton family moved to Durham. He attended Friendship Elementary and East End Elementary schools. The late Bishop Brumfield Johnson of Mt. Calvary Holy Churches of America. Inc., served as a mentor, confident and friend to Bi.shop Yel verton. Bishop Yelverton was a pioneer in the establishment of Mt. Cal vary Holy Churches of America. He was appointed the first deacon of Ml. Calvary Holy Church, Durham. He was pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church, Oxford, prior to becoming pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church, Durham. He served the National Work as National Elder and as Overseer for the State of North Carolina for more than twenty years. He was pastor of Mt. Calvary Durham for over 55 years. He had been mentor to numerous persons now in the ministry. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carrie Lee Strong Yelverton; six children. Elder Frizelle Yelverton. Stimpson, pastor, officiated. Interment was Friday, January 30, in Clovericaf Memorial Park, Woodridge, N.J. He died Saturday, January 24, at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was bom April 1, 1921 in David.son County, a .son of the late Jim B. Bell and Mrs. Martha Ellis Bell. Prior to retirement, he was a highly decorated Naval Serviceman in the United States Navy for over twenty years. He was a member of the VFW Post #02294 and the Fleet Reserve Association. She was bom Au gust 14, 1973 in Durham, a daughter of George and Mrs. Dorothy Daye, She was a graduate of Durham High School and-studied at Research Tri-:! angle Institute in RTP until her health failed. | Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sons. She was born November 27, 1917 in Durham,; a daughter of the late Auburn and Mrs. Lena Medlin Page. She attended Durham public schools. She was a lifelong member of Kyles Temple and was a mission ary and an usher. Surviving are her husband, Fred Johnson; two daughters, Ms. Geraldine Law of Durham and Ms. Corine Taylor of Brockton, Mass.; two sons, Abdul Sabar (Auburn Glen Johnson) and Galvester Johnson, both of Roxboro, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister. Rev. Osbin Cumins was eulogist. Inier-i ment was in the church cemetery. She died Friday, January 23. at her| home. She was horn July 1, 1954 in Vance County, a daughter of Mrs. Stella Solomon Carroll and the late Vernon Lewis Camoll. She had been a member of Jones Chapel Church since childhood and a member of its Children's Choir. She was also a member of the 4-H Club. She earned a bachelor's degree at Bennett College in Greensboro and a master’s de-l gree at North Carolina Central University in Durham. She was a resourcel teacher for 26 before retiring in 2002. She taught in Hillside High School in Durhajii for 23 years. She held memberships in Black Women's Investment Club and the Na| liona! Education Association. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Herman Alston,| Jr. of Durham; two sisters, Ms. Sharine Carroll of Creedmoor and Mrs, Jackie C. He was born June 8. 1929 in Durham; a son of the late Jesse and Mrs, Lillian Adams Cruse. He attended Durham public schools. He had retired trom American Tobacco Company of 25 years employment. Ho was married to the late. Mrs. Johnnie Lois Cruse and they were parents of .seven children.
