Your Life’s
Greatest Choice
Read - Joshua 24
By J. L. Caldwell, Pastor
New Jerusalem
Baptist Cathedral
In the 24 ,h chapter of Joshua
we read about Joshua placing a
final challenge and choice before
the people prior to his passing,
fhe challenge to the people
to make a final and definitive
choice had mainly to do with
them not worshipping idol gods,
in addition, to adhering to the
Laws of Moses (Joshua 23:6-
13). Il is a major work of all of
(iod's spiritual leaders to remind
the people of their life's choices.
Il is most important that all heads
of families inform their children
of the choices they must make in
order to make for themselves a
better life.
Today, we are all faced
with choices we will have to
make for some reason or another.
Life has been defined as the sum
total of a person's choices. From
the cradle to the grave we face
many great decisions. Out of all
the many choices we w ill have to
make, what will be our greatest
choice? There were limes when
we thought we had made a good
or best choice about something
but it didn't turn out that way.
Today some people would be"
hard pressed" to answer, so to
speak, if they were ask . "What
has been the greatest choice
you've ever made in your life up
until now?" Before attempting
lo answer the question, many
would initially reflect upon their
marriages. having children,
choosing a job. moving lo a
different localion. divorce and
other of their life's critical
events before giving an answer.
Or the response may well be."
You know. I really don't know,
because I haven't really given it
that much thought.
Such response may
well be reflective oftheun-healed
pain remaining from having
previously made bad choices.
Here is another opportunity to
make another choice. One then,
has the choice of "gelling over
it", or continue lo carry the pains
of the past. (iod. however, did
promise us help lo heal our"okl"
pains. Some of these old pains
arc lo be shouldered and born by
ourselves (Galatians 6:2). Some
ofthesc pains are lo be shared by
oilier good-hearted people. We
arc lo bear one another's burdens
(Galatians 6:5). And some of
these pains are lo be shifted on lo
(iod. We arc lo cast our burdens
upon the Lord (Psalms 55:22).
God has promised lo sustain us
so that we can get through our
old pain. Al best our pray er for
relief should be. "Lord either
lighten my burden or strengthen
my back." In order lo help
secure our faith, (iod will most
likely do the killer - strengthen
our backs. These arc all moral
choices we can make.
The most important
choice one will make in file will
alway s be "moral" in nature. It
is these types oT choices which
will carry the greatest hurls or
the greatest rewards depending
upon the choice being made
and circumstances in which the
choice was made.
Liles greatest choice
has lo do with (iod and your
commitment lo I lim. Today, the
scrvant. Joshua, places this issue
of "greatest choice" squarely
in our faces, so lo speak, when
he says, "...choose you this day
whom you will serve..." Well,
what about it. Christian friends?
We arc all either scrvants of the
(iod Almighty or servants of sin.
We are mastered either by God's
will or our own appetites and
desires.
Life's greatest choice is made
when we decide which master we
will serve and which master we
want to master our life. There
are four significant things about
making life's greatest choice.
First, it is a necessary choice.
Every person must choose for or
against God. To refuse or neglect
to make a choice is to make one
(Matthew 16:26).
Second, it is a personal
choice. No one else can make
it for you. The old saying still
goes. "Every tub must sit on
its own bottom.” We all are
individually responsible to God
and must individually choose
(ICor 6:20). We don't belong to
ourselves. We are bought and
paid for by a higher spiritual
power.
Third, it is an urgent choice.
Life is uncertain and death is
sure. Since w e have no guarantee
of tomorrow, we had better do
what we can and ought to do
today (Rev 3:11). It is better to
have an umbrella and not need
it. than to really need it. and not
have it.
Fourth, it is logical choice.
When you consider all that the
Lord has done for y ou: when
you consider all ofthe trials, out
of which He has brought you
through, it is logical that you
would choose lo serve Him.
Joshua said of himself. "As
for me and my house, we will
serve the Lord." What's your
choice? (Joshua 24:15).
