SPORTS North Carolina Central University track and field head coach Michael Lawson has announced the signing of jumping specialist Jaelyn Rice from Smyrna, Ga. Rice currently attends Wheeler High School in Smyrna, Ga. She is Wheeler High School’s high jump record holder and a three-time all-state track and field athlete. She is also a three-time region champion, twice for high jump and once for long jump. “I knew I wanted to run track at an HBCU when I was eight years old,” said Rice. “I have been running track so long, that it has been my primary hobby.” A team captain in each of her last two seasons, Rice is expected to enroll at NCCU for he fall semester. She plans on majoring in exercise sports science to become a physical therapist.
