Durham’s Nathaniel 'Rex’
Purefoy Keeps His Rodeo
Show Going
Nathaniel Rex Purefoy started performing Rope Tricks
in Junior High School on stage and in the gym at Hillside
High School
He performed in the first Black Rodeo held in 1972 in
New York City. A movie was made titled “Black Rodeo
featuring Nat Purefoy.”
In New Jersey Rex performed in the Pan American Cir
cus. He also worked as a News Photographer for The Star
Ledger Newspaper in Newark, New Jersey. He went to
Hollywood California and performed on the Flip Wilson
Show. He performed for the Cleo Hearns Rodeo for a few
years, the Bill Pickett Rodeo a few years, and the famed
UniverSoul Circus. Rex has performed for the Gene Au
try Museum and in Las Vegas and The National Cowboy
Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Rex has performed for
years for The American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri
as a Cowboy entertainer and serves as a member of the
Board of Directors.
Purefoy does a One Man Hollywood Cowboy Show
featuring his three Trick Horses. His exciting show lea-
lures Whip Tricks, Fancy Gun Twirling, and his signature
Fancy Charro Roping. He even has a horse that he has
taught to twirl a rope. He has a repertoire of hundred’s
of western songs and is an accomplished musician sing
ing and playing his guitar during his show’s. Purefoy has
been performing since 1971 and continues to perform to
day.
He has a wide selection of Cowboy collectibles: silver
saddles, over 70 fancy embroidered cowboy shirts, ropes,
whips, gun holsters, fancy boots, sterling silver bolo’s
and western movies. He is a cowboy historian and recites
stories of African American Cowboys, White cowboys
and Mexican charro’s for the pleasure of all who listen.
Herb Jeffries is the man who inspired Rex to be a cow-
boy and also Bob Scott a Black Trick Rider. Rex faithfully
went to the movies as a young boy and he and his friends
would imitate the Other influence’s included Sunset Car-
son, Bill Elliott, Monte Hale, Gene Autry, Lash Larue,
Eddie Dean and Roy Rogers. Purefoy met his childhood
Western Star, Herb Jeffries at the Gene Autry Museum in
Hollywood where Peter Jennings did a national television
show that honored Herb Jeffries for being the only black
singing cowboy after 50 years.
Purefoy, also known as, America’s favorite Black Hol
lywood Cowboy performs regularly for schools, muse
ums, horse shows, televised parades and private events
in Kansas City, Missouri. Rex Purefoy is a member of
the Wild West Arts Club (WWAC) where he wins “Best
Dressed Cowboy” every year in Claremore, Oklahoma.
Purefoy has numerous trophies and awards from perfor
mances at events and parades. Rex Purefoy is featured
