HAMPTON. \A - The Winston-Salem State men
and Virginia State women led the wax with three selec
tions each as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Asso
ciation (CIAA) Men's and Women's Basketball Coaches
Associations unx eiled their 12 picks to the 2014 all-con
ference teams Saturday.
This season's line-up features Men's Player of the
Year. Mark Thomas of Livingstone and lamesha I leal
of Virginia State as Women's Plaxer of the Year.
Thomas, a 5 10 senior guard from Saginaw. Michi
gan. led the Blue Bears to the top seeding in the South
Dixision axeraging a league-best 21.2 points per ‘tame
while dishing out 5.1 assists per contest, second in the
league. Axeraging oxer 32 minutes per game. Thomas
was third in the (TAA in assist to turnoxer ratio (2.5 to 1).
Deal, a Norfolk. Virginia nalixe and 6-0 senior for
ward. led the Lady Trojans to the best record in the ( TAA
(24-1) and its first national ranking in school history plac
ing third in scoring (17.9 ppg.), sixth in rebounding (X.2
rpg.) and second in free throxx percentage (S5.Q) iin the
conference. Deal won last year's Defensixe Plaxer of the
Year award.
Thomas anil Deal are joined by Omar Briggs of Vir
ginia Union (men) and Deja Middleton of l axetikwiile
State (women) as Defensixe Plaxers of the Year. Briggs,
a 6-8 senior center from Richmond. \ a.. ax eraged 14.3
points. 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game for the
Panthers. Middleton, a 6-5 junior from Richmond. \a..
led the ladies in the (TAA with II.9 rebounds per game,
was second in blocks al 2.8 per game while scoring 13.4
points per contest.
