Failing to
Accept The
Cross
Read: Hebrew 12:2-3
By Pastor John Caldwell
New Jerusalem
Baptist Cathedral
In spite of all that God
has done to prepare and
offer man the promise of
salvation, man may fail
to accept or receive the
gift which God in Christ,
so freely offers. Man still
likes to operate his life on
his/her own terms. In an
unspoken way, man still
prefers to be his/her own
savior. Man finds it easier
to ignore and not believe in
hell and hell-fire.
Often times man’s
personal achievements
can leave him with a
mindset of carelessness
and callousness. This is
the result of a person not
accepting any outside
knowledge which doesn’t
come from his/her own
mind. We find this non-
accepting mindset among
many astute professionals
who pride themselves in
thinking for themselves.
Such individuals eventually
turn into what the bible
call “scoffers.” These
professional are not limited
to politicians, bankers,
engineers, architects,
lawyers, doctors, ministers/
pastors, nurses, high
school teachers, medical
personnel, and college
professors. However, on
the other hand these same
professionals are found
among the most serious
believers of Jesus Christ
throughout the world.
Professional are taught
to be rational and clear
thinkers. Thus they feel
accomplished in their
personal thinking. Some
remain open minded
to all truths and others
remain closed minded to
what can’t be physically
explained. They failed
to realize that you cannot
x-ray sin. We speak here
of unseen spiritual issues
wherein our lives are inter
related, whether you wish
it to be or not.
Many of the poor have
so devalued themselves
because of their deprived
conditions, they either
seek extra help beyond
themselves from a God
Who has everything or
reject Him because He
hasn’t come to their rescue
in satisfying their basic
needs to exist. -
It is the work of the
enemy to misguide the
human mind as it relates to
the thinking and reality of
Christ. An individual can
become callous and a
scoffer when he/she has
become a high achiever
on their own terms. They
have become successful
and materially well off
as the result of their own
efforts. This sets up the
mindset that I didn’t need
any outside help for me to
get where I am. Therefore,
one’s pride and ego kicks in
resisting any outside input
on personal development.
In other words, no one can
tell me nothing about what
I need or should have.
God freely gives His
unlimited love on a daily
basis as called upon,
therefore, all believers
should be about spreading
this fact to those who do
not know Jesus in the
pardoning of their sin.
God, however, never
violates the freewill of any
individual or personhood.
He doesn’t twist anyone’s
arms or bring bad luck
upon anybody in order to
get them to accept Him as
their Savior. He is their
Savior anyway whether or
not they receive Him or
reject Him.
The reality of living is that
without God’s love being
made available to us on a
daily basis, we are doomed
to go round and round in
circles in our lives. Under
such circumstances life can
be most boring. One may
have it all but not enjoying
it. Many will still choose to
live life on their own terms.
Many will choose to remain
on this pointless circle of
living in order to protect one’s
egotism. Until one brings
Christ into his/her circle of
life, one can only live partially
fulfilled and the social fears
and frustrations will continue
to return to haunt them
without the Cross. We all
can continue to ignore God’s
claim upon our lives, but the
Cross will always be open
to us. Are you a part of the
world which thinks you can
get along and deal with your
problems without relating
them to Christ and His Cross?
Don’t be! The Cross of Christ
is God’s supreme gamble that
His love can break through
the circles of our self-concern
and re-direct our broken lives.
