THE CAROLINA TIMES - SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2016-9 Nursing Legends Honored by Pi Chapter Of Chi Eta Phi Pi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. recently celebrated its Ninth Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Millennium Hotel. The theme was “Embracing Change: Meeting the Challenges of Healthcare Organizational Effectiveness in The New Dawn!” Six legends, who included a Licensed Practical Nurse and Registered Nurses, were recognized for providing many years of outstanding service to the nursing profession and the community. They were: Mr. Tommie S. Smith, Ms. Eulah Mae Cole, Ms. Beulah Mae Cole Hollowell, Ms. Shirley F. Jones, Dr. Gloria A. McNeil and Mrs. Gwendolyn Jones Parham. They served in a variety of areas, including but not limited to, staff nurses, educators, nursing administrators, Associate Chief Nursing Officer and community activists. Recognition of the legends was done by Lt. Col. (Retired) Elmontenal Allens, Pi Chapter member and 2015 Nursing Legend, and Ms. Linda L. Hester, Pi Chapter President. They each were presented a plaque. Ms. Mary W. Burriss, Chairperson of Pi Chapter’s Program and Projects/Education Committee presided. Other program participants were Ms. Sylvia 0. Richardson, Chaplain of Pi Chapter, Dr. Robbin Harmon, Southeast Regional Director, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., Ms. Willie Gilchrist, representative for Dr. Wanda Lawrence, Chair, NCCU Department of Nursing and musical tributes by Ms. Mia Rothwell and Ms. LaWanda Powell. Mrs. Alberta L. Allen, the only surviving Charter Member of Pi Chapter, and many other family members, friends, health care professionals and other community leaders were in attendance. The 2016 Pi Chapter Scholarship recipients were Ms. Jessica Baldwin, a senior nursing major at North Carolina Central University, and Ms. Stephanie Nicole Douglas, a junior nursing student in the accelerated diploma nursing program at Watts School of Nursing. Ms. Betty Reed, Chairperson of the Pi Chapter Scholarship Committee, made the presentations with assistance from Ms. Linda L. Hester and Dr. Robbin Harmon. Ms. Mary Dempson, Pi Chapter member, coordinated the efforts of the hosts and hostesses who were: Ms. Norris Burton, Mrs. Veronica Eubanks, Ms. Geneva Fearrington, Ms. Vanessa Foust, Ms. Carolyn Henderson, Mrs. Roberta Arney Hill, Mrs. Wyvonia Perry, Mrs. Stacey Williams Porter, Ms. Betty Reed and Ms. Linda Rouse. Other members of Pi Chapter are: Mrs. Ruthene Bellamy, Ms. Eula Cole, Ms. Jouel Cooper, Mrs. Foretta Davis, Ms. Jueldenn Ford, Dr. Ernest Grant, Ms. Beulah Hollowell, Mrs. Marion Miles, Mrs. Tina Scott, Mr. Riley B. Walters, Jr. and Mrs. Edna Williams. Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., is a professional organization for registered nurses and nursing students. The purpose of the sorority is: To encourage the pursuit of continuing education among members of the nursing profession; To have a continuous recruitment program for nursing and other health professionals; To stimulate a close and friendly relationship among members; To develop working relationships with other professional groups for the improvement and delivery of health services; and To constantly identify a corps of nursing leaders within the membership who will function as agents of social change on the national, regional and local levels. The sorority motto is “Service for Humanity”. Pi chapter members are diligent in their efforts to promote the objectives of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.
