NC A&T, COHEN, LEONARD TOP MEAC PICKS; 2016 TEAM-BY-TEAM SCHEDS; BCSP AT 23 LUT WILLIAMS BCSP Editor The last of the four HBCU athletic confer ences held its 2016 preseason football media affair Friday (see UNDER THE BANNER) just as the 22nd year of the Black College Sports Page came to a close. We began the BCSP in the first week of August 1994 and finished that first year at the end of July 1995. And just as players report to their respec tive schools over the next week, making sure all their paperwork is in order, grabbing their gear and hitting the fields to begin preparation for the 2016 gridiron season, we too are ready to begin our 23rd year of publication by getting you ready for the coming festivities. On the field, the start of the season is exact ly a month away as the first week of games will begin on Thursday, September 1 and run thru Sunday, Septem ber 4. A full slate of 37 games will be con tested that first week. Before that, the BCSP will get you ready for the start of the season over the next five weeks lead ¬ UNDER THE BANNER WHAT'S GOING ON IN AND AROUND BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS NC A&T THE PICK IN MEAC FOOTBALL: NORFOLK, Va. - North Carolina A&T, who has earned a share of the last two MEAC football ti tles, has been picked by conference coaches and sports information direc ¬ tors to come away with the 2016 title in results unveiled during the league's Preseason Football Media day here Friday. With 13 first-place votes and a total of 489 points, the Aggies were voted over 2015 co-champs Bethune- Cookman and North Carolina Central who finished second and third respectively. NCCU had four first-place votes to three for B-CU but the Wildcats garnered 447 points overall to outdistance the Eagles for second, who tallied 388 total points. N.C. A&T running back Tarik Cohen was selected as the MEAC preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while South Carolina State linebacker Darius Leonard was selected as preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Cohen, the two-time defending MEAC Player of the Year, totalled 1,543 rushing yards in 2015 leading the conference with 123.6 rushing yards per game, carrying the ball 264 times with 15 touchdowns in 12 games. He finished first in the MEAC all-purpose yards (148.8 ypg.). He capped the season with a 295-yard, three touchdown performance in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. Leonard was named to the 2015 All-MEAC First Team, as a linebacker. Leonard finished the season re cording 70 total tackles, one forced fumble, one recov ered fumble, two quarterback hurries, four passes deflect ed and two breakups. He notched two interceptions, one for a touchdown, and 13.5 tackles for a loss. Leonard was second on the team in sacks (5.0) and interceptions. The voters picked first, second and third all-confer ence teams. Bethune-Cookman led the way with 15 se lections, seven first teamers. NC A&T had 13 overall se lections and six on the first team. NCCU had 10 total and four on the first team. SC State had nine overall selections and four first teamers. BCSP Notes Alcorn AD Horne gets extension LORMAN, Miss. - Alcorn State Athletics Director Derek Horne has received a three-year contract exten sion that will keep him at the helm of school's athletics program through 2019. In three years under Horne's watch, Alcorn Braves has won a tennis title and two SWAC titles and a Black Horne Carter succeeds Derrick Ramsey who resigned in No vember, 2015 after seven years on the job. Carter was AD at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. He also served as AD at Delaware State University and Bowie State Uni versity. Carter College National Championship in football. The Braves also appeared in the inaugural Celebration Bowl. Carter new Coppin State athletics director BALTIMORE, Md. - Coppin State President Dr. Maria Thomp son has appointed Derek Carter to the position of Director of Athletics effective September 1,2016. Wells new coach of Stillman women's hoops Stillman College has announced the hiring of Michelle Wells as the new women's head basketball coach. Wells, an Alabama graduate, has five years of experi ence with the Lady Tigers' program, including four as an assistant (2009-2011 and 2014-2016) and one partial sea son as the interim head coach in 2009 when she led Still man to the SIAC Tournament Championship game.
