By: Chonna Campbell The Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. congratulates Juanita B. Massenburg on being elected as the South Atlantic Region, 17 th Regional Director. Juanita will serve the South Atlantic Region along with Regional Representative Sierra Cunningham, a senior at Johnson C. Smith University. Juanita B. Massenburg has been a dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. since May 4, 1985. With qualities of a servant leader, inclusive communication, mediation skills, and progressive ideas, her contributions to the sorority has allowed her to become a strong leader serving in various roles from her local chapter, Durham Alumnae, to the national grand chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., level. With each position she has accepted the responsibilities assigned and sought ways to enhance each assignment. Juanita believes that in every task there is always an opportunity to improve and deliver exceptional results. At a very early age growing up in Henderson, North Carolina, Juanita’s parents instilled in her the importance of dedicating herself to assisting others. She was taught to believe in the community and to not stand still. The values she was taught became a part of her character and the basis for her life of service. Many years passed since childhood but remembering the values instilled in her, Juanita continued to be active in her community and on the campus of North Carolina Central University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Masters Degree in Business (MBA). Juanita is dedicated to her family and values. She shares her life with her husband Daniel of 40 years, one daughter, Mundi Massenburg Gattis, her son-in-law Jonathan Gattis, and two precious grandchildren. Her close-knit family and friends have always provided her with support and love and in return she gives this same support and love to others. Juanita is an active member of Peace Missionary Baptist Church where she serves faithfully. She has held many positions within the church and currently serves as Vice-President of the Voices of Peace Choir, Recording secretary of the Pastor’s Aid Committee and a member of the Building Committee. Leading an active life in the Durham community, she has been acknowledged for her service and dedication as a community leader and volunteer. Her leadership, dedication and creativity definitely indicate that she was “Born to Serve.” For her community contributions, she has received numerous awards and honors which include: Spectacular Magazine 2016 Woman of the Year Award for Civic and Human Rights, Who’s Who in Raleigh - Durham Area Award, Governor’s Award for Outstanding Community Service - State of North Carolina, Governor James B. Hunt and National Presidential Volunteer of the Year Nominee - President William “Bill” Clinton. From president of the Durham Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to North Carolina State Coordinator to National Leadership Academy, National Scholarship and Standards Member and to her most current elected position South Atlantic Regional Director, her legacy of leadership and service continues. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. calls her the South Atlantic Regional Director but the Durham Alumnae Chapter calls her their own special jewel.
