6 - THE CAROLINA TIMES - SATURDAY, MAY 25, 2019 The Hillside Class of 1970 Presented “ Night Of The Stars “ 2019 The Hillside class of 1970 in collaboration with Hillside Perform ing Arts Department presented it's annual scholarship fund raiser, THE NIGHT OF THE STARS, on April 20, 2019, at the newly named John H. Gattis & Wendell Tabb Theatre, located on the cam pus of Hillside High School. It was an evening to remember. The mixed aged audience danced and sang as the sounds ofthe melodious voices graced the Wendell Tabb stage. Sponsors included Kenneth Holloway, Ava Brownlee of Allstate Insurance, Aza Comics, & Ber nard’s Formal Attire. The pre-show performers included The Majestic Angels, Mt. Zoar's praise dancers, and little 12 year old drummer, Master Isaac McCain. Following the greetings from class VP, Vanda Covington, Hill side's National Alumni Association vice president, Jessie Giles and the reigning Miss Hillside Alumni, Beverly Barnes Evans, The Hill side Alumni Choir, under the direction ofthe 1970 Classmates, Mary Scott, Vanda Covington, Valeria Hannah-Murphy, and Hillside Cho rus Director, Tiffany Agerston, took the floor with 1970 alum Burnice Parker inviting the high spirited audience to "Come On Let's Have A Good Time." The Gospel genre of the show was Emceed by WNCU’s 90.7, 1970 alum, Carolyn Satterfield. The performers rocking to the SOUL TRAIN theme took off down the track with none other than Mr. Don Cornelius himself, Xavier Cason. Then it was ON for the night. The stars came out and brought down the house! The Soul Train scrabble board brought 1970 al ums Gilbert “fireball “ Parker and Beverly Harris out of the audi ence . Then Hillside's Performing Arts students wowed the audience with their impersonation of the Mighty Temptations and a fitting and timely tribute to our recently departed Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin. Then it was time for a grown folks music. The performers included: * Vernon Langley - (Donnie Hathaway) -Love, Love, Love; Kay- ci Anne (Whitney Houston)Saving All My Love For You; Stick Reed (Smokey Robinson)medley; Val Hannah -Murphy (Anita Baker) Caught Up In The Rapture; The Fabulous Family Sircle- Sounds of Motown; Val Murphy & Vernon Langley (R. Flack & D Hathaway) The closer I get to you; Shavonne Bailey (Erykah Badu) singing Call Tyrone And the closer was Mary Scott (Gladys Knight)" The Way Were". The show was a “stone gas!” As dancers Vanda Davis, Val Mur phy, Nora Fozard, Janice Guess, Dora Langley (to name a few) took the floor for the SOUL TRAIN LINE with “70’s “ attire. Tax deductible donations are still being accepted as the class is trying to reach their goal of $10,000 by December 25,2019. You may contribute by mailing your check to.
