These outstanding individuals were formally recognized Monday dur ing the annual CIAA Tip-Off Awards Luncheon. Kwanza Murray, a senior guard from Lincoln (PA), was named CIAA Women's Player of the Year. The Summerville, SC native led the conference in scoring at 18.4 points per game while also leading the conference in field goal percentage at 44.8 percent and ranking second in the league from the line at 82.4 percent. Livingstone College senior Roger Ray has been named CIAA Men's Player of the Year. Ray led the CIAA in both scor ing and assists during the regular season with 23.8 points and five assists per game. The Raleigh, NC native ranks second in the conference at nearly 38 percent from three and his 82.8 free throw percentage is top four in the league. One of the top scor ers in Division II, Ray's 45 points against Virginia State were the most by a player in the CIAA this season. The 5-10 lead guard is a three-time All-CIAA selection and will finish his ca reer as Livingstone’s all-time leader in both scoring and assists. Head Coach Darrell Mosley of Lincoln University (PA) earns his first CIAA Women’s Coach of the Year honor after leading his team to a 12-3 record in conference play, finishing tied for second in the CIAA Northern Division. Mosley has led the Lady Lions to a school-record 23 wins and guided them to their first top 25 national ranking in school history. Bowie State senior Kyaja Williams has been named Women's Defensive Player of the Year. Williams, a native of Baltimore, MD, leads the CIAA and Division II with four steals per game and ranks seventh in the conference at a block per game. The 5-8 forward was one of two players in the CIAA to average a double-double during the regular season at 13.9 points and 10 rebounds per game. She ranks second in the league in rebounding and fourth in scoring. Rookie guard NyAsia Blango of Elizabeth City State University has been selected CIAA Women's Rookie of the Year. Blango totaled 101 points in her freshman campaign, scoring in double figures twice. Deaquan Williams of Lincoln University (PA) was select ed as Men's Defensive Player of the Year. Williams, a Camden, NJ native, leads the CIAA with 11.1 rebounds per game, includ ing a CIAA-best 7.6 defensive rebounds per contest. He is one of only two players in the CIAA to average a double-double during the regular season, scoring 12.6 points per game. Winston-Salem State Coach Cleo Hill, Jr. earns Men's Coach of the Year honors. Hill led his program to a 13-4 record in league play and a share of the CIAA Southern Division regu lar season title. This is the second time Hill has been named CIAA Coach of the Year with the first coming in 2012. Shaw freshman guard Nigel Martin was voted Men's Rookie of the Year. Martin led all CIAA freshmen in scoring during the regular season at 14.4 points per game. The CIAA tipped Tuesday (February 25) and runs through Saturday (February 29) in Charlotte N. C. The SIAC men and women are next up with their tournaments running from Tuesday, March 2 through Sat urday, March 7 in Rock Hill, S. C. The MEAC and SWAC men and women then take tlie court the following week (March 10-14) in Norfolk (Va.) and (March 13-14) in Birmingham respectively. CIAA Look for a competitive tournament for both the men and women in the CIAA's 15th and final year in Charlotte before moving to Baltimore next year. Defending tournament champion Virginia State (19- 8, 12-3) and rival Virginia Union (18-10, 11-4) earned the top men's seeds from the North Division and got byes into the Wednesday and Thursday quarterfinal rounds. In the South Division, Johnson C. Smith (19-7) and Winston-Salem State (15-10) tied for the top spot with identical 13-4 conference records but JCSU earned the top seed by virtue of a better divisional record (10-2) than WSSU (9-3). Both have byes into the quarterfinals. In terms of which is the hottest team, VUU comes in on a seven-game win streak while JCSU has won its last six games. For the women, defending tournament champion Virginia Union (22-3, 13-2) - minus last year's tourney darling and MVP Shareka McNeill (out for the season with an injury) - is back as the North's top seed. Lincoln (23-5) and Bowie State (22-4) both finished with 12-3 conference marks and 6-2 division records but Lincoln won a coin toss to take the second seed. In the women's South Division, tire top seeds and early round byes went to No. 1 Fayetteville State (18-8, 15-2) and No. 2 Johnson C. Smith (17-10, 12-5). VUU has a six-game win streak while FSU has won nine straight. SIAC Clark Atlanta (12-6) has caught Albany State (12-6) atop the men's E. Div. race and the two have clinched the top two seeds for next week's tournament. In the West, it's ditto for Miles (16-2) and Tuskegee (13-5). For the SIAC women, the same two teams in the West, Miles (14-4) MILESTONES —— • Six-five Howard senior swingman Charles "CJ" Wil liams broke the long held Mid Eastern Athletic Conference career scoring record Saturday in a game at North Carolina A&T The Richmond, Va. native and prolific scorer broke the re cord of2,275 points previously held by Tom Davis, a 6-7 power forward who played at Delaware State from 1987-91. Williams entered the season 15th on the MEAC's career scoring list and entered Saturday's game needing just four points to break Davis's record. He tallied 10 points to raise his total to 2,282 points. He added 22 points Monday in a game vs. N. C. Centi-al to bring his total to 2,304 points. Williams has three more regular season games and the MEAC Tournament to pad the mark. Williams averaged 15.6 ppg. in his rookie season (2016- 17) en route to being named the league's rookie of the year. He tallied 20.4 ppg. as a sophomore to earn first team all-MEAC status. Last season, he was named to the first team again while tallying 17.9 ppg. He is currently averaging 18.2 ppg., third best in the MEAC. • Six-foot Hampton senior guard Jermaine Marrow made history recently as he passed Hampton legend and former NBA great Rick Mahorn as the school's all-time scoring leader. MEAC A win by North Carolina A&T Monday (83-62 ovei Maryland-Eastern Shore) coupled with a loss by Nor folk State (78-55 to Bethune-Cookman) propelled the Aggie men to the top of the MEAC standings at 11-3. North Carolina Central got wins over UMES and How ard to stay just a game behind the Aggies at 10-3. NSU dropped to 9-4 with the loss and is in third. There are just three dates left in the MEAC regular sea son, Saturday (Feb. 29) and Monday (March 2) and the finales on Thursday (March 5). NSU hosts Howard Saturday, travels to Delaware State Monday and finishes at Morgan State Thursday. NCCU plays at South Carolina State Saturday, hosts Bethune- Cookman on Monday before finishing with a showdown at home in Durham vs. A&T. A&T has just two games left, Monday at SC State and the finale next Thursday at NCCU. Bethune-Cookman has wrapped the top seed for the women with a 13-1 league record and two games left on its schedule. The battle is for the spots behind them between 10-3 Norfolk State, 10-4 North Carolina A&T and 10-4 Morgan State. NSU and MSU meet on the final regular season date, Thursday March 5. SWAC Second-place Texas Southern was stunned in overtime (74-72) by ninth-place Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday that knocked the Tigers another game behind men's league leader Prairie View A&M (12-2) at 10-4. In the SWAC men's and women's Tournaments, only the top eighi teams get in with the top four seeds hosting quarterfinal games before the tournament shifts to Bartow Arena in Birmingham on March 13 and 14 for the semifinals and finals. Five dates are left in regular season play which ends on Saturday, March 7. Southern (10-5) and Alcorn State (9-6) are currently third and fourth in the men's race but three other teams are less than three games behind them. He averaged 19.1 ppg. as a sophomore and 15.6 ppg. as a freshman while playing in the MEAC. • Six-foot North Carolina A&T junior point guard Kam- eron Langley became the school's all-time assists leader Mon day in a game vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore. Langley, currently leading the MEAC and fourth in NCAA Div. I basketball at 7.4 assists per game, tied his career-high with 13 assists in the game. In doing so he surpassed Thomas "Ice" Griffis's record of 582 dimes handed out in his career (1984-88). Langley has another season to chase the MEAC's all- time record of 622 assists held by former Coppin State guard Larry Yarbray (1988-92).
