First, then, in the National Intelligencer it
was asserted that Mr. Jay only wrote four pa
pers, viz 2, 3, 4, and s, and this assertion
was persisted in after the error had been pub
licly rectified and pointed out. It was assert
ed that Mr. Madison wrote 64, and it was ac
cordingly set down i the first list claimed by
him. But here in tbisteeoud list, in the City
Gazette, find mrmber allowed' ; Mr Jay
is.five, and 64, is, at length, given up. The
truth is the fact had been ascertained and sta
led by Mr. Jay's biographer in Helaplaine's
Repository, and the eh asm which occurred be
tween the 6ih and 64th number aeeounted for,
in a manner that convinced somebody it would
not be prudent to persist in urging a claim,
