Metropolitan Dimlrict.--We learn fmm the RegiMer, that Major Wm. J. Clark, of Raleigh, 1 1 a declared himself a Candidate for Congress, in niiposilion to the Hon. J. R J. Daniel. Bolli Lo rnfocoe. frii CerGEsaioAi. Ditict At a Lacofoco Convention at Newborn, Wm. K. Lane, Eeq. of Wnyiie county wm nominated aa a candidate for Congress. He is the aarne gentleman who waa Lenten by Mr. Donnell in 18-17, by 3b3 majority. 3d District. We regret that the difficulties in llu strong Whig Dint net are not et Owrcuine. 'I "he render will find in anether column a commit- niritioti just received from Gen. Docker-, a no tice fur a meeting at Laurel Hill, and a corres pondence between citizens of Cubanus aud the lliree Whig r.aud date. PaoacairnoM. The coitiinns of the Union groan rl.iv after day with deiiuncialiona of what it now cll the "lufamoiia Syxtem of Proscription," "cutting off hesds," 'butchery," &c. It is deeply tu be deplored that the Editor of the Union never fount nut the evils of proscription during the en tire tarntv yeses that ita party practised it, daily. If it had C'Hiilriiiuea roscripliou then, there would have been no ueed of it now. Dut-after all the v.ih.uhle offices in the count ry hare betU filled Willi I.ocofoco, to make way for whom Whigs xvi-re remored, it is ridiculous, and worse than n dn-ulous, for the Union now to keep up such an incent-ant howl over the reslorulion of Whigs to a kvr of Ike offices from which tht-y were ejected Im the Locofocos. As a sample of the injustice ilh whieli the Whig have been treated, wo refer tj I he New Orleans Custom House, iu which, out of one hundred and fitly clerks, V.., there were only leu WUigs. And now, when a Whig Admin- i n-lmtiou appoints a Whig Collector, a prodigious uiit ry is made because that Collector redeceslhe miuiher of locfoeoa to eighty-five, aud increases the nuinher of Whigs to sisly five, leaving stilt a majority of twenty Loeofoco office holders, in a Whig city and State. The truth is. that Locofo iKiii goes for the sjioils, all the spoils, and uolhiug hut the rpeile. The Uuiou calls upon the Senate to demand the Preaideat'a reasons for every reinoeal. This Would all be very well if the I'umn had ever thought of decnaodiug similar reamna from ita own rrrautenta. The N. Y. (Jlcbe, one uf the locofoco organa, bears slroiig tesiimouy to the excellence of the appointment of tlie new PoeimaKler of that city Mr. Rudy, ft nays, "Wetliink, as Postmaster, I.e will supervise that branch of the public, service with honor to himself and satisfaction to the Mib lic We believe his course as Mayor was hijy.lr aiirnved, and we know that if a mau Can retire from the position of Mayor of Ibis cKy with th Mprobation larstowed upon Mr. Havetn-jer and Mr. Brady, he can acarcely fail to give general flisractiou in whatever i.titer capacity he may iicupy. Thiia f a clear indication of a dlermiualion to turn out Whigs whom Gen. Taylor appoints, as soon s l.ooufocoiiii geU the chance a period which we uih may be snme geners tions distant. With fuch a delermia.ilioii, uudoiihledlv giervading the whole party, from the Union down, that paper is siill bitterly complaining, day by day, of Whig proscription. It is "a great misfortune that the L inon's party ever established such a dangerous and demoralizing syatem a a proscription for opin ion's sake; for it m now impossible to ft rid of it, or at least of what seem to be proscription. in new York and Philadelohia. aiulvasal thai Kanawha Salt Works, iu Virjinsi." TWw ha been reporu, (false however, aw far,) ef eases in Baltimore, Washington City, "llichmawd, tc. It has even been reported, so wa VeW, that cases have occurred in this town bdtjoattty. This is well known here to be a mistake; and wa pton.ise oar readers that whenever ease shall appear here., if ever, we will promptly make it known. This is n-Jt only our duly, bat in the end it is al vcays best, for it allaya alarm, and prevents exag geration. We have strong hopes, however, that the disease will not appear among our pines. That wa may secure an exemption it is all impor'.H tain mat cleanliness, of body, of house, and of premises, be strictly enforced; that temperance in eating and drinking be observed; and that uo un necessary alarm be indulged. It was confidently asserted by physicisoi, when the disease prevailed aevenleen years ago, that fear killed more persons than the cholera. Since that time its nature has become Iwtter. known, it is treated with inneh greater succesa, and consequently no such para lysing fear is fell at its approach. We copy below, from various sources, hints as to its symptoms, and directions for ita prevention and cure. The reader might do well to lay up all these things. From a publication of lha Board of Health of Norfolk, Va., wo extract the following: 1 Of all preventive means jet discovered, claauliuesa w by far the moat important. Where ever fillh ud moisture abound, there does Cholera I find most victims In prnpnrliou as the town is clean, dry and well ventilae, may we hope to escape the violence of the pestilence. Every cel lar should be thoroughly cleaned, and, all rolteu wood or other decomposing matter being removed, well sprinkled with quick lime or chloride of lime. This ought to be repealed every fortnight. Yards and gardens should be cleaned and drained as fsr as practicable, so that tjjere may be no standing water or eveu wet places in themall hog pens, luauure piles, piles of oyster rWlls &.., removed. The i'rr.iL;'T 'uartiiienU should be carefully inspected. They are loo cdtarmonly filled with the accumulated rubbish of year, and ure seldom cleaned or ventilated. (This fact may, in some degree, aorount for the great mortality ainoug the black during the epidemic of 1832.) Let every w-rvaul's bad- room, be well cleaued every 2 or 3 weeks, and daily ventilated by leaving open the I doors and windows, when not occuiaVd. This I vrnv ueciarea mat he has no desire to eatf bJaiii B) peculiar theory; bat at the request af frianda nd citisena of the District, has penned these lines. Hie thing to be observed are: Avoidance of any articfe-of food knwwn to dav agree with each person, jptf any excess of ardent pints, a due regulation and care of the system, avoidance of undue excitement, either mental or bodily; exposuie todaatp or night air, and eapeci ally the use of drastie or saline cathartic At mospheric ch ii nges .especially control this disease; therefore, full and freo ventilation is important. 1 he usual primary symptoms consist qf a loose ness of the bowels or a diarrhea, with coldness of the extremities snd- spasms of the bowels, which are often neglected until the patient is stricken down tt rise no more, The use of the warm or hot bath is prejudicial both from its relaxing effect aud the movement of the patient requisite for its accoinpl'ehiiieiil; rest in the recumbent position being important. Opium, either in the form of laudanum or paregoric, or Dover's powder, com bined with spirits of camphor or the powdered gum, is our eheet-auchor, with the addition of a little Champagne brandy aud water; but the lat ter inuat be used only rn the attacks, and not free ly as a preventive. Various mixture have been sugge4ed lo be kept iu families. The following are among the best: Take wine of ipecac aud strong essence of pep. permiut, each two fluid drachms; Sydenham's laudanum, sn fluid drachm; and etberial tincture of valieran, half an ouuee. Mix aud give the dose as follows: Prom thirty drops to half a teaspoonful every ha)f"1iour le two hours, in a little brandy and water, according to the age of the patient and the violence of the spasms. Or take of strong laudanum, one drachm; spir its of camphor, one drachm; etherial tincture of valerian, one drachm. Mix and give as the pre ceding. Place then the patient in bed, give liim tee iu small piece, lo est this allaya the thirst, and will asHist in relieving the nausea am! vomiting. Warm and dry frictions are also useful, and the bedclothes may be raised by hsops and the eteam of alcohol ic fluids carried by a pipe beneath them.
