took tlie dose as he retired for the night,

The Madoe War.
San Francisco, Jan. 20. A dispatch
from Yreka to-day states that a mes
sage had arrived at that place from
the; headquarters of General Wheat
on, commanding the troops against
the 3adoc Indians. . A severe battle
was fought last Friday by the troops
of Wheaton, consisting xf two ?hun
dred and fifty regulars, two com pa
nies of Oregon volunteers, and 25 ri-file-men;
- of California under. the
command of CaptL Fairchild, making
altogether about 400 men. The battle
took place near the eastern shore of
Title Lake. ; f
C&ptain Bernard on Thursday went
around the north end of the lake to
the c:vst side, and to. the east of Cap
tain Jack position. $JHe watf to ad
vance against Captain Jack from the
east, and Wheatoh from the south
west, the forces of the latter to be
under cover of the fire of the howit
zers. On Thursday night such a
dense fog enveloped the country that
they could not see forty yards. The
two forces were about twelve miles
apart, thougli to communicate with
each other it was necessary to go a
much greater instance.
Friday, morning Captain Bernard
opened the battle against Capt. Jack,
who had about 200 warriors conceal
ed among the rocks along a line of
two miles length. W heaton heard
firing, but had no alternative but to
move to the aid of Captain Bernard
without the aid of the howitzer fire.
The troops' fought an unseen enemy
from 8 o'clock in the morning until
dark under a terrific fire, during
which scarcely one Indian was seen.
The loss to the troops was 40 killed
and wounded. The loss to the Jad
ocs is unknown.
The troops were finally obliged to
retreat to their camps. Bernard's
force bore the 1 runt of the battle,
and sullcrrd terribly. Ail the caval
ry fo'igiit on foot. -Among the killed
are Frank Trimble and G. R. Brown,
of . Oregon.- G. V Roberts .was
mortally wounded. Capt. Ferry, of
the Uegulars, was seriously and Lieu
tenant Kyle slightly wounded. The
movement is called a forced recon
noissance. Brkakixg Ur of the Gkrman Gaj:

The breaking up of the German
gambling pas will make some
strange metamorphoses. An Eng

going into I iisiness. -Think of these
men who have handled incalculable
amounts of money,--and been in : the
company of the highest and wealth
iest, if not the distinguished, of all
nations, becoming green grocers, um
brella makers, and hair dressers. But
then, these people ought to make,

tion of their lives have 1 een devoted
to the most methodical habits, and
the long years ami mental calcula
tion and the incessant handling of
men must have well-fitted them for
the prosecution of business.

What the Season Suggests.
To assume warm clothing at the com
men cement of the cold season is only an
act of common prudence. But something
more than this is required to put the body
in a state of defense against the searching
atmosphere of winter. Dump has a de
pressing effect on the vital organs and the
animal spirjts. The amount of life power
taken out of the strongest ot us by the
chilling vapors which frequently load the
air at this period of the year is very consid
erable, and to the weak and languid they
are extremely detelerious. To protect the
system against -their effects, it must be in
wardly toned, regulated and reinforced, as
well as shielded outwardly by apppropriate
garments. This essential service is more
safely and satisfactorily accomplished by,
the daily use of Hosteler's Stomach Bit
ters than by any other means within the
province of medical science. The fact
here stated, is as incontrovertible as a de
monstration in mathematics. ' Nobody dis
putes it. It is a matter of common belief
and of general record.- Here; the case
might be rested but the public, naturally
enough, wants to know why this famous
vegetable specific is so far ahead of all
other medicines of its class. This reasona
ble curiosity can be readily gratified. . The
Bitters comprise five important elements,
viz : a stimulant, a tonic, an aperient, and
a blood depurent. Each "of. these compo
nents, as well as each .of the other subor
dinate ingredients, is the purest and best
of its kintL; Theyj are proportioned jn ac
cordance with a formula that has been ; in
use for twenty years, and operate harmon
iously and simultaneously. Hence the
-uniform success of the medicine. ,
