It must seem very strange to .Englishmen that servants of the people in this country jgot on y tell lies to Credit Mobilier Com mittees bn.t swear to them, and yet are neither hned nor sent to jail. A carpet-bag Senator in Mississip pi named itobinson na? gone crazy on the subject of religion. We said as far back as live years ago that, if a religious thought or sentiment ev er did strike Robinson, it would ei ther kill him outright or run him as crazy as an infuriated bed-bug, and sure' enough it has. Itis said that Brick Pomeroy, since Old Pom's failure in Kansas, has de termined to change hia. name. He declares that a Pomeroy who is such a blockhead as to spend $100,000 for a seat in the U. S. Senate without getting it, is a disgrace to the family; A Worcester (Mass.) paper comes out in defense of mothers-in-law. If the edithor of that paper were inspi red by the right sort of chivalry, he would defena people who are unable to defend themselves. The Rev. Dr. Newman is going around the world. When we see such men as the Rev. Dr. Newman start round the world, we always re gret that the world isn't a great deal lather around than it is. Where the Burden Presses. The N. Y. Tribune says : Men will draw comparisons between the cor ruptions of the Republican party and Tammany, notwithstanding the en deavors to pooh-pooh the latest de velopments. Tht St. Paul Despatch counsels its Republican comrades that the burden of the Credit Molil ier sin presses on the party because the party nourished and attempted to conceal it. The Despatch says : When the proof of Tweed's infamy was made public the whole Demo cratic party felt the effects thereof, although by much the greater por tion of the party reprehended such acts as those of Tweed as severe ly as "did the Republicans. Indeed, Tweed's overthrow and the subse quent endeavors to punish him. are mainly due to the efforts of honest Democrats, notwithstanding which the Democratic party was justly held responsible in large measure for his sins, j n the case of the Cre lit Mo bilier corruption, more outrageous, if possible than Tweed's, the Repub lican party not only fought against the strongest proof until further re sistance was futile, but now, when a majority of the party acknowledge the crime of the leaders, it is found impossible to punish the criminals, and impossible because the party so wills it. The cases of the Republicai s who purchased seats in the Senate are after tne same fashion in respect to their bearing upon the Republican m-ty. Letit not be forgotton; ther that the party which created, nursed, and elevated to high place the Credit Mobilier Congressmen . and. corrupt Senators must be held to a strict res posibllity for the misconduct of. these its representatives. Chloral in Odontagia. A physi cian, writing in .this -Medical Twies, recommends chloral as' an efficient remedy for toothache. Being called upon immediately after the great Chicago fire to extract some aching teeth, and not having the necessary instruments most of . the dentists, too, having had their officesboflsnim-ed--he prescribed twenty; grains of hydrate of chloral,4o lessen the pain and produce rest until he could ob tain the needed forceps. To. his as tonishment, the ache in every caRe not only promptlyVahished; biit fail to return. It may also be stated Jere, on the authority of a German medical journalthat Dr.- Rhen has succeeded in treating a! threatening case of spasm of th e glottis, in wb ich ine attacks were both severe and fre juent, with chloral-hydrate. The attacks were by this means, Dr.Rhen reports, perceptibly? lessened, and yilyquieted. The case was .that ot a child seven months old.
