The N. Y. Bay Book says : One Samuel D. Melton, by the grace of Satan made Judge (!) in the State of South Carolina, a white man,: a Cau casian, saw proper, at the late Inao curation ball at Washington, to lock arms with a couple of negro women, and promenade the hall, the Observ e1 of a thousand disgusted and sick- pned observers. It was a loathsome' sizht: men and women of refinement looked upon the debauched hero of this humiliating exhibition with un disguised and inexpressible contempt. A "nigger equality" journal, the New York Sun, thus aira its opinons up- on the disgusting show : "One of the best partical illustra tions of the doctrine of social' equali ty that has yet occurred was made at the recent inauguration ball bv Judge Samuel D. Melton (Melton) of South Carolina, who was seen pro menading the ball room for an hour with the wife of the Hon. It. B. El liott,. ju. irom tnat estate, on one jirm and one of the celebrated Misses Rollins on the other. Each of these ladies is a bright mulatto, fair to look upon, and the Judge undoubtedly consulted his taste as well as exemp lified his devotion to the cause of equal rights in paying them such courteous attentions. After his pro menade he returned to a group of colored ladies whom hemadealmost the sole recipients of his attentions during the entire evening. It is in teresting to know that a South Caro lina gentleman can so far ignore the prejudices of his class as to serve as Attorney-General of the State under such an Administration as the pre sent, also to fraternize socially with the class so lately regarded as chat tels hardly possessed of souls." We do not blame the niggers. They of course were proud to be thus lage3 in juxtaposition with an in dividual, demoralized though he was, ofthe superior race ; but what truly refined and beautiful white woman would feel honored by the attention of this dirty-minded white official, "judge" though he may be, after this boldly manifested social position ? How do the white citizens of South Carolina like the picture ? What would Calhoun, Poinsett, Legare, Loundes, Hayne Pinkney. experience in looking upon it ? Alas ! poor, disgraced South Carolina ! To be made to realize that the time could ever come when one of jxur white citizens, a leading judicial official, would be found promenading the great hall of the Presidential mall- sion at an inauguration ban witn a negro female on each arm, and glo- i i i i i rying in nis social aeDaucnery. Only thirty-six Senators drew ineir extra pay lor tne last session. The rest, with a single exception, have simply left it in the hands of the Sergeant-at-Arms to be called for when the excitement has subsid ed. Great deference to public opii -ion is shown in this sacrifice of in terest on the amounts Ivins: idle. What with the Credit Mobilier stock turned over by Mr. Kelley and the uncalled for back pay, the Sergeant- ai-Arms na Ms hands lull oi con science money. vv ill of Napoleox III. The will of Napoleon III. has been proved in jngiana. tiis personal estate is sworn at under 120,000, and this he Jeaves to the Jimpress without re crve. To the Prince Imperial there is but one bequest says the Pall Mall (iazettethe Imperial Crown. If this be" true, adds that paper, we have here a certain violation ofthe idea Napolftonienne according to which any tJonaparte may govern who is caller by the voice of the people, this res- and the Emperor's will is in t peet an important manifesto to the Imperialists. It is a message to the friends of Prince Napoleon. A Last Warning. It is related that George Driver, who was huni ig in rhile Chicago on the 14th instant, w on the scaffold, seized hold of the rope that was about to be put round bis neck, and holding it up, said to the spectators : "Whiskey did this forme. When any of you take a drink of whiskey hereafter, think of this rope and remember my fate." A "College Journalist." Anoth er man has graduated at the Yale "School of Journalism." He has been rather more successful than any of his predecessors. When he found that he couid get no more than $8 a weex on any Western journal, he went right away and got a position as clerk in an oyster saloon, where "is weekly stipend, is $10. r 5 The postmaster of Blairsville, Ind. was out of stove wood, and conclud ed to utalize the Grant and Wilsou pole, which had served its day and purpose, and it was accordingly hewn uuwn, cut, split and piled up under the shed. That same night an im pecunious Democrat stole the wood. A compromise was effected. fAJwwgtorraispatchsay8: "The overnihent is, still pardoning, pris js at Albany, -convicted ofiku fux crimes, and niil6ss there is po'sr juvely reasonable opposition .from le residents in the localities where prisoners lived, all yirill undoubtr be pardoned before long.
