A sight of the ladies who will lire is of itself enough to induce all to and aside from that the object is a no one. The actors, some of them, have 1 s jnie experience (not professionally of .inse) and we may raise our expectations kli with the certainty that we will not disappointed. We return our thanks to the Marshals for invitations to attend the annual commenceroet exercises at Davidson College. Both of the prisoners pleaded "Not Guilty." The. trial was set for Thursday and a venire of 50 men was summoned. Mr. Geo. E. Wilson and Major C. Dowd, will appear for the prisoners. ' A Hale Old Gentleman There is an old gentleman in Iredell county by the name of Mays, who is now 86 years of age. He yet works his farm himself, and with a little assistance in that work, makes a good living for his family. The old gen tleman is hale and hearty, and in the course of his long life hrs ha4 but few sit k davs. We have these facts from a son of Mr. Mays, a youth of 60 years. The old gentleman lived the greater part of his past life before it was discovered that strychnine improves whiskey. . Personal. Mr. T. G. Maynard, favor ably known in this community as the Keeper of the Cemetery, and who resigned the position last week, left for Canada West a few davs ago. Mr. Maynard fought in the Crimean war under the British flag, and bears "honorable scars upon .his body He was wounded five times. He made many friend during his stay in this city. Personal. We were glad to see in our sanctum, yesterday afternoon, the pleasant face of Mr. R. McKay, the genial '-local" of the Greenville Republican. It will be many aday before we forget the kindness and courtesy with which he treated us at the time of the excursion to Greenville. Mr. McKay will remain and report the enter tainment to-morrow for his paper. To the Ladies. The ladies of Char lotte are rcsjectfully requested to meet this morning at Oates' Hall, for the pur pose of decorating the room for the dinner to-morrow; and we are requested to ask that each business house in the city will send one young man to assist in that work. All Odd Sight. A very small man, look ing to be not over three feet tall, with long hair and wearing a beaver, attracted con siderable attention on the streets yestcr dav. The sight was truly refreshing to the small boys, who have nothing to do but hunt up persons and things with which to amuse themselves. Absent Rev. B. S. Bronson, pastor of St. Peter's (E.) Church, has gone to Fay etteville, to attend the Episcopal Conven tion which is now in session there The price of admittance to the entertain ment to-night, is T5 cents ; reserved seat $1 ; two reserved seats $1.50. The hot and dull season is upon us, and the streets yesterday presented a dull ap pearance. A letter addressed to Samuel J. Baker, Charlotte, N. C, is held in the post office here for lack of postage. May cherries appeared upon the streets yesterday, and sold at 15 cents per quart.
