Under the above title I propose to pub lish first in newspaper, and subsequently n book form, a series ot articles giving tne war record of North Carolina from the election of Lincoln in -Nov., 1SG0, to the lose of the war between the States in May ttAiH. -My plan embraces three divisions: 1st. Accounts of each skirmish and bat- tki on the soil, or upon the waters of North Carolina. 2nd. Accounts of every battle fought during the war on the soil of any State, in which anv of the troops of Jvorth Carolina took part especial "care . being taken to show what those troops did and sulfered m each of those battles, and what glory and renown our officers and men fairly won. 3rd. " A Southern Chart for all time." An explanation of the third division of he proposed plan will be suuinmeu at a later dajr. That I mnv accomplish tins arduous, out pleasing self-imposed work, I invoke the aid of all my brother soldiers, and ask them to furnish me material which can be arranged and digested so as to form a com plete record ot the heroic deeds 01 the sons of North Carolina upon the battle fields of fhe U)Ofedcrac.y;.udjespeciaily tip ask all who can write to furnish me details of ev erv battle in which they participated, and the part Dome uy uieir mimcuiaiu com mands. The time mar not have come to write this portion of North Carolina's History ; bi.t it has come to collect material and ar- n ns3 it for the use of the future historian. The living actors will soon pass away, and much valuable information, unless gath ered now, will -ie lost forever. Hence, after waiting for several years for some one more comiietent to undertake the task, i nave aeierinmca to uevuiemeiciiianiiiig vears of mv life to this labor of love. vield to none in love for mv native State, or in admiration .for the gallant men who have shed imperishable glory upon her. I prefer to give these accounts nrst in newspaper form, in order that omissions and errors, 11 any occur, may do pomiea out and corrected before, the work shall pass into more enduring form which it will assume, should it prove what I desire to make it, a valuable acquisition to the war record of the South. Several prominent" actors in the war have already promised their co-operation and the valuable aid ot their pens to lesseamy labors and to make the work complete, and I hope to enlist an army of valuable aid ot their pens to lessen my laDors ana to make the work complete, anu 1 nope to enlist an armv of valuable co-laborers 111 the srood cause as . readily as did North Carolina enlist her sons to fight the battles of the "Lost Cause." General officers from other States, who commanded North Carolina troops, arc re spectfully asked to give me all the infor mation in their possession, relative to the conduct and bearing ot those troops. In endeavoring -to do justice to the sol dicrs of my native'State, I certainly shall most carefully abstain from doing nijus tice .to those from anv other. Mv brethren of the press will confer a favor bv giving the whole, or such part of this ProstKjetus as they may deem proper. one or more insertions, calling attention thereto.
