Little real estate is changing hands now. Has Charlotte a cow law? A stranger rutins the place would not conclude so. 7" 1 ere were no Hems to be had in the Mayor's Court yesterday. Governor Vance is able to be upon (lie .streets again. Notwithstanding the panic the Oiwerver job j.re.es continue to run from early till late. Call and spc specimens of job work. Tlie scarcity of money at present is only 5iirp;wsed by the scarcity of locals' yester dav. Tlic Weather Nq pen can do justice t- this subject. A dull, steady rain fell almost without intermission all day yes terday, and the cartel's ot about thejeon- sistency of juortar. Walking is very bad. Chaiigeuf Managers. Mr Thos Joiner, of Macon, Ga., will, in a day or two, take charge of the Southern and Atlantic Tele i;r.tih Company's otfice in this place, suc ceeding Mr J Lumsden. The Dark Lanterns. The B ard of Aldermen at a recent meeting instructed tlie Marshal to order some dark lanterns for the use of the police force. The lan terns have been received and were put in the hands of the policemen on yesterday. - Postponed. Owing to the inclement we ither of yesterday and the consequent jiinmess of the attendance, it was found necessary to postpone the meeting of the stoekholders in the Charlotte Ice Company until this evening, when it is hoped there ttiil be a full attendance. Capt. Fred. Nash, the city Clerk and Treasurer, left last evening on the North tmin, expecting to return in about ten days. Tlie object which he lias in view in leaving Charlotte at this time, will be re ferred to by us at a future day not far dis tant. deduction of Wages and Number of Laborers. The panic affects everything The North Carolina Railroad Company has, we learn, owing to the present strii -gen y in financial matters, reduced very largely, the number of.its .employes, and has made a reduction 6f 10' per cent, in the wages of those who are retained. . K!laai'g Quarter. Already letters are being received by hotel keepers and .others, engaging lodgings for Fair week. A letter was received yesterday by one of onreitizens from oneof the most prominent gentlemen in Union county, S C, the wri ter asking our friend to engage him quar ters for that week for a party of eight. Person a l.-j-lkv Dr Broadus of Greer -ville, and Gen John B Gordon of Gcorghi, passed through. Charlotte yesterday morn ing going northward. lr J J Moft ofStatcsville, Internal Rev enue Collector for this district, was at the Central Hotel yesterday. Prof II K Col ton of New York, a learned man and a pleasant gentleman, was in the city yesterday. Caston Court. A gentleman of this place, who went over to Gaston Court a few daj's ago, returned yesterday, and brings a bad reiort. He says there is al most literally no money in circulation in tlie i ount', and that there was not a sin gle case tried in Court, men not having enough money to pay costs. The Sheriff had in his hands eleven thousand dollars worth of executions and did not collect a dollar. Thi3 is the report as brought by a gentleman just from Dallas. Painful Accident. A few nights ago, Mr. Samuel P. A. Berryhill, who lives in this place, was attending a corn shucking at the place of the Jatc Elias Springs, Esq., about five miles, from town, and while there became involved Iri a playful scuffle with a young. friend, which resulted in Mr Horry fall fiaving one of his hips thrown oat of joint. The accident is a painful one, and has caused Mr Berryhill much suffer ing. His injary is such as to have pre vented his removal to town up to this time. Miller's Hall Saturday Night. Mr James McLaughlin j the advance agent of Pord's Combination, arrived in Charlotte yesterday. By an advertisement in anoth er column, it will be seen that this troupe will certainly favor our citizens with a performance on Saturday (to-morrow) cve tfng, wiien they will present Wilkie Col--ns "New Magdalen." Two . hibitors from Mecklenburg county were at the Greenville Pair Mr J C Alexander had an eiegant pair of home-made harness on exhibition, and Col D G Maxwell was there with his sewing machines. Carolina Central Hallway This pn- terprise is being pushed rapidly ahead despite the panic- and the scarcity of money; the financial embarrassments have necessitated the discharge of several civil engineers. No reduction has, however, been made in the wages of the laborers. - The Greenville Fair. The editor re turned yesterday from the Greenville Fair, and, elsewhere in this paper tells all about Quite a number of Charlotte people are still in Greenville. The Charlotte Cornet Band will return to-morrow. This band furnished the music for the occa sion, and did do, we learn, with great ac ceptibility to all. We learn that many of the exhibitors at Greenville, have prom ised to be at our Fair with the articles which they exhibited there. Many of the people of Greenville county will visit Charlotte on that occasion. We will all be glad to see them. FIfflit Last Night A fight, which terminated seriously, took place last night a little after ten o'clock, at what is known as the "Five Points." (in rear of the Market House,) the combatants being two colored boys, Gadsden Earle and Joe . Gadsden owed the other boy ten cents, for which the boy asked him. This made Gadsden mad, and after some sharp words, pulled out a knife and cut him in the left side, below the nipple, the blade penetrating to the hollow. One of the lungs of the hoy was cut, and a nieee of , . . . it came out. Dr. Green went, to his assis tance and rendered what relief lay in his power. Gadsden, up to the time of this writing, has not been captured, having lied immediately after doing the cutting. Beware 1-We learn that a gentleman who has just returnd from the Richmond Fair, that the city was thronged with pick pockets and sneak thieves, who stole large quantities of money and clothing. We mention this matter because we have h;ard that at least two of these thieves came on from Richmond to Charlotte and are now here. Whether this is true or not, it will be well for our people to he on their guard against such characters, by keeping their front doors securely locked after dark. We warn hotel keepers, as well as hou-c keepers in general, to watch closely all suspicious-looking characters who are seen loitering around, seeming to have nothing to do. These fellows, if they ar-i here, are fore-runners of the vultures who will be here during Fair week to prey upon the crowds gathered together at that time; if we are mistaken about their presence here now, we can safely assert that they will soon be hcre, tand will ply their rascalities at every possible opjwrtunity. Hence we caution the public against them. The Fair of the Carolinas. The press of both this State and South Carolina, has many good words for the great Fair, which will begin in this city on tlie 2oth inst. We give below extracts from three of our exchanges. The lialeigh Keics says : "As will be seen by the announce ment in our advertising columns, the Fair of the Carolinas will commence in Charlotte on the 25th inst., and continue till the 2)th. Extensive preparations are being made to ren der this fair as usual, a grand- and crowning success, and from its sit uation and the energy of those who have it in charge, we are assured of it already. We shall take occasion to refer to this fair when we have more space at our command than at present." The Greensboro Patriot says : The Fair of the Carolinas begins at Charlotte, Nov. 25th, continuing to 20th. This is one of the hest fairs in the South, and will be more than usually attractive this year Else where will be found an advertise ment to which Ave refer: the readers lor particulars The Secretary -will please accept our thanks for a complimentary. The Columbia Phoenix says : We are indebted to the Fresident, C. Mills, Esq., for a card of admission to the Fair of the Carolinas, to be held in Charlotte, on the 25th, 2Cth, 27th, 28th and 29th of November. The premiums are liberal.
