FIFTH AXD CLOSING DAY. ; Award of 'Premiufns-Oxdets vfA the Carolina Military Inttitute-ThtMule Race, &g. .' ' ?r - -4i The most eventful week of the entire year, for Charlotte, haa jast close'd a week which has, for months past, been, looked forward to with UhW liveliest interest by nearly every citizen of the pJaoe, both young and old- We believe that the week Las been one of i-.1 ensure to nearly all, though it hat l.cii. sr.f of hard labor to oianyif w W fe? tc?ferday wah' closJny dayf Fair of the Carolinas, which began on Tuesday moraine:. We bavenothing new to refer to, we believe, having reported in previous articles, the things on exhibition, so far as it lay in our-power or-9 faras-re have thought it necessary to refer to pir ticular articles on exhibition. We come now to a auiujining ,uj),A The exhibition was od ;Ve nayjaay ' exgelleut ; but it was meagre,"very meagTe ih some depart ments. The ladies' department was splen didly filled and that, too, ; with the, very choicest and most beautiful articles, as we have before taken occasion to say. The art galleijy was alicj well filled : with'the mo3t beautiful paintings, drawirrgs,- cray ons, &c, &c. This department would have done credit to anr Fair. The success which ments named, is due almost solely to' the ladies, and too much praise cannot be lav ished upon'.thum for their. efforts.- . . . The geological department was also full, and was one of the most interesting of the Fair. Thfe credit for this is due to Mr" 8 C Johndton.1 who wrote and sent in all direc tions, gathering upUpeCimehs for .ejchibl tion. The machinery department was al so quite full and interesting. This depart ment wa under tho efficleht management of Capt J F Johnston, who worked hard that it might not fall behind the' others. The display of agricultural products, stock, cattle, &c, was small.1 ''The farmer "of Meek 1 en bnrg county did not do their duty, tor the Fair of the Carol inaa, And thj a fact which cannot be denied; They did not encourage it either by their presence or by sending articles for exhibition. If the farmers had done their duty tbeserde partments, would have beejvery different from what they were." The inpst notice able thing in the stock line, were two hogs which were exhibited by Mr D R Leak of this city. They are just sixteen months old and are perfect monsters for their age, it being estimated that one of them weighs over 600 lbs, and the other nearly as much. They are a show within themselves. The first thing in order yesterday mornr j ing was the award of premiums. Thit was read from the center of Floral Hall by Dr. F. H. Gloyer, to an interested crowd of exhibitors. The list will be pub lished in the Oa&gRvxa so soon as it is fur nished us, which will be in a few days. The photographing of the Cadets of the Carolina Military Institute was a feature of the day. They were marched up, ac companied by the Charlotte Cornet Band, and took their positions in. front of Floral Hall. A view of the Cadets, together with the officers and Superinteuclent of the In stitution, and Dr. Columbus Mills, Presi dent of the Society, Gen J A Young, Chief Marshal, and perhaps 'other 'gentlemen. was taken by Mr Jtufus Morgan, the cele" brated artist . The Cadets hare had head quarters in Floral Half all wee!k; with' the flag of the Institute, emblems, c, hang ing on the wall, T j r; : - j At 2 o'clock tile mkle race took place.---. This was the most amusing event of the entire week. Fiye entries were made, the riders all bein'g colored. Th mules wtra rsal m,ules. Allof them," jaye one, weye huy and stubborn1 looking bruteaJlve ntries were made,' but two entered. ; after one half mile heat had beW tun. The rf rs were terriblyln eainestt amd beat and lashed around as' if their,: lives depended on their winning the race.--They came up to the stand in all soijfai of order, and one r two stopped 'jjilvA-dilA; ting io the stands and jluie:tofi0ieap to taw unmVpcit4Vfhia whiP Mch' thei ridewt carrrl In concluding thii artfcle itlhr propriate to;aaycthaJf '4ita'CR&tfaok ftQ that it should have bean, it 'was no kult of the managaxj . They barn Jabpred Msiduoualy for the taccsn of the Fair, and if there is fault anywhere it U hot with them. We mention particalarly, Dr Mills, the President ; T L Vai, Esq, Treasurer, and Messrs T W Dewey, Jos Graham and j H Orr, the Executive'Comruittec. These gentlemen may be paid to be the running Works of the Fair, and we know 1 that they have done all that mortal ipen could do to make the Fair a credit la Charlotte and to the Carolinas. Their disinterested efforts sltould not be allowed to' pass unnoticed. I hereby eertify that I hnwstamoiered since my iufancy, and I am happy to say that Dr. N.
